Have you seen the Rose Theatre Opera House in SL?

It's like an old opera house come to life, full of amazing details like crystal chandeliers and reflective marble floors. You almost expect the Phantom to pop out any minute ;P

Day 1245: Sirena 2 NEW Animated Curly Hair (Layla/Elaine)

The new Alice in Wonderland is opening soon!

Time to check out those Wonderland sims :) The coolest one so far is New Wonderland. It's a role-playing sim full of little doors and things that tell you to eat or drink them :P

The SLURL is Silence (188,6,27).

"Layla" is a long, curly hair that goes down to your lower back. It's Animated, and pulls up to a half ponytail using the sculpty Hair Comb. And of course, it plays an animation when it changes style :)

"Elaine" is a shoulder-length curly hair with a blunt bang/fringe. It's Animated, and pulls back using a Headband so you can show off your earrings :) You can optionally let your friends remove your Headband and let your hair down.

Happy Valentine's Day :)

In case you havent been there, you've got to check out My Funny Valentine. It's a sim stuffed full of interesting scenes.

Day 1231: Sirena NEW Animated Flexi Braid (Brooke)

Nice to be able to sit around the mermaid pool without clicking "Edit", isnt it? ;P

OK, that's not entirely true...I spent the week working on the new flexi braids. It's an animated hair that goes to a flexible braid, including the fuzzy ends. And the best part is, it comes in all 60 Sirena hair colors ;)

"Brooke" is an animated Flexi Braid! It's long hair that flows down to your lower back. Using the Hair Tie, it goes up to a flexible braid that moves along with you. The braid even has a fuzzy end :D Of course, the hair plays an animation when you change styles.

Day 1224: A Brand New Day

It's done. Yay!

If you have been following along these last 2 weeks, thank you so much for your encouragement, tips, advice, and support! There were times when it looked like it would never end. There were times when I almost gave up.

Im so glad I blogged about this build and had a chance to share it with you. I am glad I survived those ruthless people who forced me from my old store. Now, it feels like I can move on.

Day 1224: Grand Opening + Wet Hair + Free Gift

The new Sirena Hair sim is officially open! :)

The theme is freedom, without walls or doors, accessible from land or sea (or air). A magical island with sights and sounds.

(And no, in case you are wondering, I wasnt
staring at Second Steve's new chest for hours. I was just making sure the lighting was good. Honest :P)

Day 1223: Countdown to Grand Opening (1 day to go)

Fourteenth Day
(The Cutover)

One more day, one day more... (did you see Les Mis? ;P)

Today is it. I have to cut things over to the new sim to get ready for the Grand Opening tomorrow.

Time to get all those last minute things out of the way.

Like putting those cool water textures from Real Waves all around the store...

And sound too. All kinds of nature sounds :)

BTW, the environment sounds are free from Real Waves! All you need to do is rez them, that's it!

And I made the depth even around the sim, so it's just the right height for mermaids to swim and shop :)

Finished the tunnel between to 2 sections of the store, so we can go from one side to another without having to swim all the way around.

Then, it was finally time to cut the store over.

The Landing Point will stay the same. The new store is right behind the New Release area.

And I want to cut the store over with as little downtime as possible (lol Im not really sure how to close the sim anyway :P)

So here's my goofy idea: Create some temporary walls under the existing store. These walls wrap around the Landing Point, and will direct visitors to the new store.

Late at night, when there's no visitors, push the walls up then get rid of the old store as quickly as possible.

I admit...not the brightest idea. Hey, Im half fish, OK? :P

So, when no one was looking, I pushed up the temp walls and started moving the old store 200m up.

Well, at least, that was the plan...

You see, Im not very good under pressure.

The walls made it hard to select the old store. And I was terrified of breaking the new store.

Plus, I was having problems linking these prims that are too far apart.

All this was happening when people were starting to arrive :(

I admit, I lost it.

Forget about saving the old store. I started deleting the old store. Any prim I could find. As fast as I can.

Then, I terraformed like mad to connect the existing Landing Point to the new store with sim terrain.

Thankfully, I remembered a trick I learned back from a class at NCI: You can turn off Simple rendering (Advanced/Rendering/Types/Simple), which makes it MUCH easier to terraform under an existing structure.

Piece by piece, the old store began disappearing...

After a frantic hour (or so), the new store is up...finally!

Here are the few pieces of the old store I managed to save before I freaked out.

A chance to say a proper Goodbye.

The Grand Opening is almost here... Nervous. Nervous! There's like a thousand little things to do still!

OK, did the Store Directory sign. Heehee, I always wanted to make a sign that says "You are Here" ;P

Created the "Open Packages Here" area.

Had to Subdivide the land, which is a terrifying thing to do! There's a scary message about all your land settings getting changed and stuff. Def hate doing it ;P

Put in an invisible Greeter at the Landing Point. I did it mainly to warn visitors not to give L$ to people pretending to work in the sim.

Can you believe people actually do that? ;P

Setup all the mermaid poseballs at the mermaid pool...

Updated the Update Group picture...

Even setup a Customer Service area...

(Landscaping)

Umm... umm... 3 days to go... What to do? What to do?

Gotta get the brick road laid out. These mossy brick roads from Straylight are def hard to fit together, esp since the store is circular :P

Thank goodness for the bulldozer! After some fudging to hide the joints, the mossy brick road now goes all around the store :)

Next, some trees from Straylight for a bit of shade.

Don't you love those cool tree shadows? ;)

Add in some giant mushrooms...

Now, there are places to sit in the store, in case things take a while to rez :)

Finally, it's starting to look like a store!

Heehee I can sit here all day under the tree and watch the ocean.

Wait, I have to finish that new hair...ugh!

That's it, Ive made up my mind about the theme. It's going to be magic forest by the sea. You know, trees, crystals, mushrooms, and these mossy brick roads from Straylight ;P

Really, no more changes from now on. Honest.

(Note: mermaids can't make up their minds ;P)

Let's see, what's next on the list?

Oh, signs. I need new signs for the store.

These signs on the shelf are too hard to read. Plus, they are too big, and make it hard to see things on the bottom shelf.

Since, it's magical forest by the sea, I guess I can use wood.

Don't worry, I didnt chop down any trees. I found these pieces of wood on the ground. Hey, Im a mermaid, I totally recycle and everything :)

Put it on top of the shelves...now, they are easy to see, even from far away.

There are signs everywhere. Signs. Signs. The signs are taking over. Somebody help me!

(Displays)

Finally, time to put products on the shelves. That's why we're doing this whole thing, right? ;P

But these old displays are...well, old.

Especially those color packs. The letters are big to make browsing easier, but they're seriously in need of an update!

Long story short (and it was a long story!), here's the brand new display :)

The display is now double-sided (so they can been seen from the land and water sides of the store).

And the color packs are in little stacked boxes. heehee seems to be the "in" thing in SL ;P

After a whole day of re-stuffing boxes, Ive got most of the products on shelves :)

Oh, and the lawn. It's lawn instead of sand today...cause I still cant make up my mind about the theme...

Day 1218: Countdown to Grand Opening (6 days to go)

(Putting Things in Place)

Time to actually put the store into its permanent home!

So far, Ive been using the other side of the sim to figure out what to do. Time is running out, so Ive gotta move things into place.

I want to use the existing Landing Point in the sim (no more LM changes!). So the new store would actually go on top of the existing one.

Fortunately, the new store extends in a diff direction, so I can get most of it ready without disturbing the existing store.

And most of the new store happens to be right behind the current New Release area. So first thing I have to do is put up a curtain :)

Sorry to block the view...but it's about to get messy out there!

Gotta be careful with that bulldozer...dont want to hit people with a pile of sand ;P

With the terraforming done, up goes the shelves!

Heehee hope nobody catches me out here ;P

Even managed to get the mermaid pool in place.

Eighth Day
(Water and Palms)

I spend a lot of time in water, so nice water is, of course, very important :)

Windlight made a huge diff for SL's water. Now, it's all sparkly and beautiful under the setting Sun.

But I like to have pretty water. Water that splashes and makes sea foam (not that mermaids like sea foam in particular :P)

Hey, I can buy this water...cool :)

Antreas Alter's Real Waves makes a whole slew of things to make your water look nice. From a calm beach to surfing waves.

Most are megaprims that you drop on top of the water. Just wiggle them around until they look good :)

OK, enough fun stuff...back to work ;P

I really have to do something about these shelves. Crystal was a good idea for the theme, but the shelves look...ugly :(

I'll spare you the details, but Ive been detaching my hair all day trying to figure out what to do about the shelves.

In the end, I decided to make them rock shelves. Still natural, without drawing attention. Now, if I can only make them less Flintstones :P

So here's the store so far, or half of it. The other half will be a second circle that connects at the top.

Hmm...palms too much?

Day 1216: Countdown to Grand Opening (8 days to go)

Seventh Day
(The Mermaid Pool)

Did that say "8 days to go" up there? Eek! I cant believe I lost 2 days.

OK...gotta get some building done tonight. Let's see, whats on the list? Oh yeah, the mermaid pool. Heehee always wanted one of these in the store ;)

Let's make the pool a giant circle of water, with a little island in the middle, so we can sit around and show off our tails ;P

I can use a large box and hollow it out to make the edges. Dont you love being able to change the Hollow Shape now?

Except, the pool is too small. There's barely room for one mermaid in the middle :(

I need a bigger circle. I guess I can build it using the sim terrain. But how do I draw a big big circle?

Megaprims to the rescue ;P

And thanks, Peter, for suggesting http://megaprim.sl! It's so cool to be able to get a long list of megaprims like that :)

Now, I can rez a 20 x 20 box...

Change it to a Cylinder...

And pile a lot of sand around it :)

Quick peek under there to see how Im doing...

Then I push the cylinder into the water. With the cylinder selected for editing, it shows a nice yellow line around the border. I can use a little bulldozer to clean up the edges :)

Put some sculptie rocks around the sides, and we have a pool :)

OK, first one in a tail gets to lay around the island!

Day 1213: Countdown to Grand Opening (11 days to go)

(Getting Real)

Eek! 11 days to go...

Time to stop dinking around and get stuff built for real.

Where to start? OK, the floor. I'll start dropping floor tiles, put shelves in, then go from there.

Plop down those sand-textured tiles, and close up the ends with sim terrain. They blend into each other naturally, so no seams.

At this rate, I'll be done in no time :)

This is where the shelves meet the ocean. I would like to put the shelves at an angle like this to make things less cluttered.

This is half of the 45 degree mark (umm...22.5 degrees?) How am I going to cut off this end piece?

Use Top Shear?

But how am I going to make the other end disappear? Plus the sand textures wont match...there'll be a big seam :(

But that only works for 45 degree angles.

And I cant use sculptie, cause they act weird when you walk on them.

*sigh*

Oh, oh, how about if I use sim terrain to fill the ends?

Then put a piece of sculptie rock to close off the end. I can use sculptie here, cause no one is going to walk on it.

Now, humans and mermaids can both shop from this display :)

Day 1212: Countdown to Grand Opening (12 days to go)

(Way Above and Way Below)

Lots of water, big open skies. Isnt it beautiful? :)

But if Im not going to have a roof, I should put something up there. Something interesting...

Something like a crystal? Im such a mermaid ;P

First, I'll make the sculpties in Yuzuru Jewell's Tatara. Yuzuru is the brilliant author of Rokuro.

Since he came out with Tatara, it's been like my all time favorite sculptie tool. It takes minutes to create the base for a sculptie. You can then import the base into Wings 3D for tweaking :)

BTW, Yuzuru has a bunch of really great video tutorials (from making a sculptie heart to a diamond). You can see them here.

For this arch, I want a sharp edge. So this is ready to go straight into SL :)

I want this arch to be big. Really really big. So Im going to use megaprims :)

Once Im in SL, I'll use my super duper SALT HUD to order a megaprim close to the size I need. Amazingly, the SALT HUD is free!

OK...so, what size do I need?

How about 70 x 70 x 1?

Nope...too flat.

Umm...10 x 50 x 70?

Better. But, it would be nice if it bent down a little more.

I know, I know. How about 50 x 10 x 70?

Whew! Saved by applying the sculpt map to the megaprim :)

Oh, if you ever use megaprims this big, be sure to mark them "Phantom". That way, they wont cause any lag.

Next I'll make the giant crystal that goes in the center.

Copy the arches a bunch of times, and Ta-da! :)

Last thing for tonight: I have to do something about the bottom layer of this sim terrain. It's so totally...blah!

Hey, Im going to be spending a lot of time down here underwater!

Because of Fleur's great list of tips, I found a bunch of great places for underwater landscaping :) Thank you, Fleur!

Bibi's Coral Reef Shop & Underwater World has a set of coral rock textures that work well as terrain texture.

You can even mix and match them on sculptie rocks to get an awesome underwatery-reefy look :)

Oh, oh, and there's something Ive been wanting to do since I started SL!

Meet my friend, Chester! Isn't he adorable?

I know, I know, deep sea anglerfishes dont belong in a reef. But hey, this is a mermaid sim ;P

(Laying It Out)

Spent all day scrubbing XStreet packages. They're all done...just need to stuff them into the XStreet Magic Boxes. Almost there.

It's almost midnight, but need to do some building. Otherwise, I'll have nothing to blog about.

See how blogging motivates you? Grrr...

Something has to be done about this beach/mountain backdrop. Need trees.

Have you seen the nurseries in SL lately? They are amazing. 1 prim trees! Wow.

Trees. Trees. Pretty trees everywhere... which ones do I get?

I'll use some Linden trees and stuff from Inventory for now, and figure out exactly what I need later.

Next: Rough layout for the store.

The existing store is on the right. I can use the other side of the sim to test the layout.

Perfect! :)

I need crystals. That's like the main design element of the new store.

I'll have to make some custom sculpties later for certain spots.

Meanwhile, found this amazing sculptie crystal on XStreet from Fox Labs: Sculpted Crystal Cluster. It's Free, and Full Perm. Best of all, it's only 1 prim. Wow!

Next is the sculptie store sign, which will sit beside the arrival area. That way, you'll know you're in the right store :)

Whew! The new Sirena sim is finally up and running with the old store. That old, boxy, mall-style store :(

I have to do something about it!

So, here's my daily adventures in building the new Sirena Hair store sim. I figured that if I blogged about it, I would actually do it. Did you see Julie and Julia? ;P

The goal: Grand Opening with new store on Sat, Jan 30. That's 14 days. There's a few challenges:

1. I have no experience building anything larger than a skirt. Ive made dozens of outfits and 150+ hairstyles, but big builds were never my thing. No building textures, no tools, nothing. :(

2. It has to be a mermaid sim. What's that, you ask? A sim with lots of water, sand, and crystals. You know, mermaidy. But there's not exactly a lot of mermaid sims in SL. No idea what one is supposed to look like. So...going to have to wing it ;P

3. This needs to happen in a running store, without annoying customers.

4. I need to continue making hair for weekly release. That's important. Need to avoid one of those "Never-ending Hairs".

5. Still tons of LM's to update. Whose idea was it to put LM's in notecards? Oh yeah, that was mine ;P

6. My BF wants me to run errands, cause he thinks I sit at home all day. Which...I do. Hey, making hair is serious work, OK?

Basically, with no experience, no design, and lots of busy work, I'll try to squeeze in this build! Here goes :)

First Day
(Getting Started)

Spent it updating all the LM's in the store. Every LM in every notecard in every hair package has been updated. 150 hairs times 17 packages per hair :P Now, customers will have the correct LM when they pick up a demo or hair from anywhere in the store. Yay!

What's left: XStreet boxes, XStreet listings, and this blog. Ugh.

After dinner, I finally have some time to build.

In the old store, I always felt claustrophobic. But it was in a commercial sim, and I needed high walls to keep out the visual spam.

Now, I dont have that problem anymore :)

Bring down those walls!

Next, the floors.

Instead of just using SL land to create a beach, I'd like to let mermaids swim under the store. So, I need to use floor prims.

To save prims in the old store, I used 20 x 20 x 0.5 megaprims. Ive heard megaprims had issues, but didnt really understand why.

When I went shopping for animated water for the new sim, I came across a notecard entitled "About Megaprim Lag" from Antreas Alter of Real Waves (who makes animated water :D). He explained that megaprims causes lag with collisions. Like an avatar running into one. Or walking on top of one.

Yikes.

So, all floor prims need to be replaced with standard 10 x 10 prims.

While Im at it, I can change the floor to a beach sand texture :)

Prims are prepared underwater, in linked sets of 4-10 x 10 prims to replace the 20 x 20 megaprims. Hey, there are advantages to being a mermaid ;)

Then, I push them up to replace the floor tiles.

And bring out the bulldozer to merge the landscape into the floor prims. Love that bulldozer!

Except, well...it's super ugly. Like Mars or something :(

Trees! I need trees.

Too late to get them tonight. I have to fake it.

Back to the ugly white tile texture for now. That way, I can replace all the floors now, then switch later, when I have trees.

Whenever customers arent looking, I sneak a set of linked prims in. Did you see that?

Finally, Im off to Photoshop to make a texture for the Landing Point, then call it a night.

Day 1209: NEW Sirena Sim and Hair (Delilah)

Welcome to the new Sirena Hair sim! :)

OK, so it looks totally like the old store. Believe it or not, I got kicked out of my sim with just a few hours notice (sim owner supposedly wanted to reclaim the land for own use). So I didnt have time to make any changes :(

I did get to put up a new sign ;)

Anyway, Ill be working hard to get everything ready. Have a gazillion LM's to update!

Day 1202: Sirena NEW Animated Hair (Abigail)

Before you say anything: I admit it, I got a total makeover (went crazy shopping this weekend ;P)

And if you havent been to Immersiva, you have to come see this! It's a living museum, with intricate sculpture pieces spread across the sim that takes advantage of SL and Windlight. And if you are really adventurous, you'll even change your Environment Settings as recommended (didnt know there were that many knobs ;P). "Abigail" is a sculpted Animated hair that goes up to a swirling updo. When you click on the gold hairpin, it tumbles down to a messy tail, and plays an animation when the hair changes style.

Day 1195: Sirena NEW Animated Hair (Molly)

Day 1188: Sirena New Water-Sensitive Wet Hair (Drenched)

Merry Christmas! I hope you are enjoying a wonderful holiday season with friends and family :)

For some weird reason, I got the urge to make a wet hair this week...in the middle of the winter holidays...don't ask :P

So I went in search of a watery place to try out my new hair and found a weird SciFi sim named pteron. It's an alien world where you can explore secret places and avoid deadly traps in search of the hidden teleporter. And of course, you get to go in the water :) Check it out! "Drenched" is a water-sensitive hair! It's a medium-length, poofy hair that turns wet when you enter water (sim water, water from accessories, or scripted prim water). It even drips :) After a few minutes, it will dry out and return to its flexi state.

Comes with an animated Water Bottle to make the hair wet, and an animated Towel to dry the hair. You can also wet/dry other people's hairs ;)

Day 1181: Sirena New Wind-Sensitive Hair (Nariko)

Did you know there's a Great Wall of China in SL? Where was it when I was trying to track down the New 7 Wonders of the World?

It's hard to miss. Cause it's like, really big ;P

Day 1160: Sirena NEW Animated Hair (Cara)

This week, it's a new hair based on popular request. It's another Mord Sith hair from the TV series Legend of the Seeker.

Cara is another Mord Sith on the TV show. She is um...nicer than Denna, because she has a nice bang/fringe ;P But she still has that cool Mord Sith braid. She wouldn't be a good Mord Sith without the braid, would she?

Oh, and this picture was taken at the amazing "sick" sims! They are a group of highly detailed apocalyptic/cyberpunk sims. And there's even a quest to motivate you to explore :) (SLURL: Sick (128,128,29)).

Day 1153: Sirena NEW Animated Hair (Blush)

Since I was a little mermaid, Ive always wanted a net veil/birdcage veil. You know, the lacy veil that wraps around your face.

If I ever get married (hint...hint...), Im wearing one for my wedding :)

Day 1111: Sirena CREEPY Animated Hair (Grudge 2)

It's October again...time for Halloween, and Halloween hair :)

Grudge 2: The Re-make! A completely re-built, animated version of the Grudge hair. Twice as scary. Twice as fun as the original ;)

The Cursed Hairpin causes Animated spasms...followed by hairs running down your face. Super creepy! Just dare people to touch that Cursed Hairpin ;P

Plus the hair can be worn as a normal animated hair that turns into a low ponytail.

BTW, this picture was taken at the 5th Annual Octoberville scavenger hunt. If you havent been there yet, you have to go check it out! A whole sim of mysteries, puzzles, haunted house, and lots of goodies :) (SLURL: PixelTrix (135,135,41)).

"Grudge 2" is Animated, and twice as scary as the original! Removing the Cursed Hairpin will trigger Animated spasms, followed by creepy bangs running down your face. That should teach people not to mess with your Hairpin :)

Day 1104: Sirena NEW Animated Hair (Kajira)

Here's another hair based on customer suggestion: A hair specifically for Gorean kajirae!

Heehee I didn't know there's such a thing either. According to the Gor novels, kajirae sometimes tie a simple knot in their hair, near their right cheek (called a Bondage Knot). This is used as a um...communication tool ;P For more info, Google "gorean bondage knot".

It just seemed perfect for an animated hair...so I decided to made one :) "Kajira" can be worn as either a flowing long hair or a ponytail. Also, you can tie the Bondage Knot at the right cheek, if you feel like...communicating. I added an optional red Ribbon to the knot to make it easier for the guys to noticeable ;P

Of course, this hair can be worn as an ordinary flowing long hair that can be pulled up to a ponytail.

BTW, this picture was taken at the Gorean city of Salerum...it's one of the busiest Gorean cities in SL. And it's less formal than most: Visitors can just walk around and explore, as long as you are dressed appropriately. Nice way for shy mermaids to visit a Gorean city ;P (SLURL: Sands of Time (174,156,503)).

"Kajira" is an Animated long flowing hair designed for Gorean kajirae. By using a Ribbon, you can tie a loop knot at the right cheek (the Gorean Bondage Knot) as a form of communication. For more info, Google "gorean bondage knot".

Day 1097: Sirena NEW Animated Hair (Denna)

One of my customers told me about the TV series Legend of the Seeker. One of the characters on the show, Denna, is a Mord Sith with the coolest braid :)

I added the option to open the braid to a loose ponytail, cause even Mord Siths have to let their hair down once in a while ;P

On these Animated hairs, don't you think it's amazing how fast you can open a braid? ;P

BTW, this picture was taken at the SEAT Abyss game! They give you a free dive suit and a HUD. The object is to get the treasure before you run out of air. It's not easy...there are tons of stuff chasing you around :P And, it's obviously designed for people, not mermaids :( But it's a super fun underwater adventure :) Once you arrive in the sim, click on the big board to teleport to "The Secret of the Unknown Abyss" (SLURL: SEAT auto emocion (128,128,21)).

Which is perfect for the new men's hair, called Edward. No particular Edward, just...you know, Edward. I swear, Im not a fangirl! ;)

Why do mermaids like garden sims?

Because they're full of lakes and rivers. And lots of people walking around. Perfect for us to spy on from underwater ;P

Day 697: Templum Ex Obscurum

Were you ever in the mood to go somewhere really...wet? As in dampy, hazy, foggy, swampy, humid wet?

Then welcome to Templum Ex Obscurum (and the Crucible sim next door), probably the wettest places in SL :P

Did I mention foggy?

Templum is a deliciously marshy jungle, with tangles of plants everywhere and no trail in sight...

Water seems to be the theme of Templum...

Day 638: SL5B-Second Life's 5th Birthday

Second Life was offically born on June 23 2003.

This week is SL's 5th birthday, with a huge celebration!

Theres a giant birthday cake at Cake Plaza...

Day 631: Caledon Lionsgate

Its been a while since Ive visited the Caledon sims.

But when my friend Virrginia told me about the new mermaid AO at Caledon Lionsgate, I had to come see (thank you so much, Virrginia! :D)

Like the rest of Caledon, Lionsgate is steampunky :)

And they are totally into airships here!

Theres this whole airship platform above the clouds, just in case you wanted to fly in :P

OK...mermaids dont like heights...I'll crawl back down now...

You can summon a Hovership, which takes you from Port Caledon to Caledon Tanglewood...

...which goes right through the middle of Lionsgate.

With the rising fuel prices, thats the secret to Caledon's success: good public transportation :)

Theres even a secret underwater tunnel that runs between Tanglewood and Port Caledon.

Oh no - The Tinies in Tanglewood are planning to invade Port Caledon! Better warn the big people...

In support of Relay for Life, you can get a totally cool Mermaid Navigator AO at Lionsgate for just L$50. This AO includes mermaid animations, and swimming height control (which helps you swim without flying out of the water :D).

And hidden among the stairs is this little red poseball labeled "Dive" :)

Day 617: Great Marine Adventure

Day 603: Garden of NPIRL Delights

Welcome to the Garden of NPIRL Delights Build Festival, the largest event of its kind in SL, put together by the Not Possible IRL group and the Rezzable.

If you like to see amazing builds, this is the place! The Garden contains works from 110 SL builders :)

First things first - grab a HUD!

The Garden spans 4 sims! Thankfully, the HUD will take you from exihibit to exhibit. And you can stop and come back at any time ;)

Or start with a flying tour above the 4 sims...

Most of the exhibits are interactive, so you can touch, hear, sit, or play with them :)

And many of these were created by famous SL builders, like this Grotto of Lost Souls by Jopsy Pendragon, who runs the Particle Laboratory.

For the steampunk fans, theres the enormous Tower of Industrial Judgement by Eladrienne Laval & Kheph777 Enoch.

There are even a few "secret" builds, like CS Montgolfier's Hudded Masses.

So look around :)

Some of these displays are truly amazing. Wizard Gynoid built M.C. Escher's "Stars" for real in SL :)

Seifert Surface, who runs the Crooked 4D House, created this sculpture called The Sky is Falling with 1500 prims arranged by script...

Some builds are funny, like Charlot Dickins' Walk Through the Slippery Slide. OK, it wasnt that funny ;P

Welcome to Bay City, the new group of Mainland sims in Second Life :)

Its been all over the Linden blogs, so I thought I'd go check them out!

Bay City is a themed set of sims run by the Lindens, set in the 1930 to 1960's.

At the moment, Bay City has only roads and a few Linden-built attractions. They will be selling the land for residents to build on very soon.

But there are already a bunch of interesting places to visit.

At the moment, the popular hangout (where all the green dots are) seem to be Cafe Deco...

Gorgeous beaches for lying around...

Theres a bowling alley...

And even a huge movie theater...

Playing movies about bunches of guys in blue jumpsuits...

Hey, didnt I see this over at the International Spaceflight Museum?

Be sure and check out Molexandria, the archeological site where they unearthed ancient prims...

You know I've got a thing for Hawaiian Hair Flowers, so I finally made a scripted one that works :)

Alicia is a scripted Hawaiian hair style with traditional Hawaiian Hair Flowers that work! The Hair Flower sweeps your hair back when you wear it.

In Hawaii, the Hair Flower shows your availability, much like a ring. If worn on the right side, it means you are available. If worn on the left (closer to the heart), it means you are taken. Its a totally romantic hairstyle ;)

Day 589: Tunnel of Light

Welcome to the Tunnel of Light! See the little pink heart? Yep, its a romantic spot :)

And its the latest Rezzable sim, the group that did Greenies Home, Black Swan, Toxic Garden, Carnival of Doom, and other cool sims!

The Tunnel of Light shows off the new Windlight Glow feature (OK, it was there before, but its now official :P).

Set your SL program to Midnight, and Touch the paper sailboat in the lake to get started...

And click for your own teacup to ride in. You can either go as a couple, alone or as friends.

But see all the pink hearts? Heehee, its a romantic place ;)

Jump in, and off you go...together in the teacup for 6 minutes with your friend :P

The teacup takes you through some amazing scenery, all with amazing Glow effects :)

Afterwards, you can stop by the store for some glow-in-the-dark thingies, like lava lamps and some really cool wings! :)

You know those double-ponytail hairs, held up by 2 scrunchies? Wouldnt it be cool if you can wear the hair without ponytails, with 1 ponytail, or with both?

Heehee, Im going totally crazy with these scripted hairs now...

Brianna is a scripted hair with 2 cute ponytails, held up by 2 scrunchies. You can take off each scrunchie separately, and the hair will drop to a regular long hair. So you can wear it long, with a single pony, or as a double ponytail :)

OK, quick question: In the movie "Splash!", what was the first thing Madison did when she found Allen's wallet?

She looked up his address on an old map! (See, thats proof that some mermaids can read maps after all ;P)

Basketball, anyone? The Ballers City sim is dedicated to basketball in SL!

Heehee OK, so everyone knows mermaids cant dribble...at least this one... ;P

Fortunately, even dribble-challenged mermaids can - kinda - play...

First, click on one of these Blue cylinder thingies for instructions (umm...dont ask why its a Blue cylinder thingie :P)

Then click on one of these racks of basketballs. It will give you a basketball.

Simply Wear it, and off you go :)

Just walk up to the basket...

Go to Mouselook (press "M")...aim above the basket, and click the mouse button to shoot!

Did I mention I cant play basketball? ;P

There are some signs with tips on playing in one corner of the sim.

Ballers City is a pretty busy sim, so theres usually someone around to play with. You can practice by yourself, or even play in teams (passing balls, blocking, and all that cool stuff :D).

Chakryn Forest is a work of art, one of those romantic places you just have to see in SL :)

(I read about this place last year from New World Notes)

Its beautiful and lush. Feels just like you're in a...forest :)

Black Swan is one of the Rezzable sims thats been there for a while. Its from the same group who did Greenies Home, Toxic Garden, and many other cool sims.

(And thanks to the many people who told me about this sim, including K, Alice, Shockwave, and Jacksonn :D)

Black Swan used to be called "Follow the Path". Thats because the sim has one big path that runs around it...

With lots of fantastic, ghostly sculptures...

And many ways to fall off the path and seriously hurt yourself ;P

Its filled with spectacular views...

Including this famous sculpture by Light Wave (be sure you Touch it ;) ).

You know, they seriously need to fix all the rope bridges in SL :P

Day 529: The Great Fissure at the Wastelands

Welcome to the umm...Great Fissure. Its the hottest canyon in SL (cause its in the middle of the desert ;P).

Im afraid of heights. And this broken bridge isnt helping :P

The Great Fissure is part of the Wasteland sims, which I visited over a year ago.

Since then, they have grown from 1 to 8 sims!

The Wastelands are kinda like Caledon, after you drop a few nuclear bombs on it ;P

They have this mountain temple thing. Totally Indiana Jones :)

And an arena...where the guys can do their fighting :P

Like Hello? What exactly do you mean drama?

*Yikes*

Nice doggie... no drama... I got it :P

Like Caledon, the plots of land are built by individual residents with a common end-of-the-world theme.

So its nice to see some culture even after the world ends ;P

The 8 Wasteland sims are just full of cool sights!

You have to check out the Bio-Hazard carnival. With umm...lots of cool rides and stuff :P

Theres even a chapel...in case you needed to get married. After the world ends ;P

And check out the cool mirage at Burnt Oak!

Such a mean thing to do to a mermaid :(

And look for those innocent-looking places...

Cause they may just have some surprises in store underneath :)

Day 526: Sirena NEW Scripted/Hat Hairstyle (Tatiana)

It's hair time again!

Ive been wanting to make a hat for a while. But with a hat, you have to squish all the hair to fit into the hat, which makes it no fun.

Thankfully, with scripted hair, the hair can fit into the hat, AND still be fuzzy when you take it off! So it can be worn with or without the hat :)

Tatiana is Scripted! It is a super frizzy hair with just a slight bit of waves. It comes with an ultra-cute fuzzy-trimed hat. When you Wear the Hat, the hair gets pushed down automatically. When you remove the Hat, the hair pops back up again :)

Day 522: Privateer Space (or Mermaid Lost-in-Space)

If you like spaceships and stuff, you definitely have to check out the Privateer Space sim!

(I first read about this on New World Notes and thanks to Virrginia for reminding me to go!)

Privateer is an entire sim of outer space. It has tons of areas to explore.

Best of all, there are lots of free goodies too :) Like this spacesuit Im wearing. It even comes with a helmet. But Im holding my breath, cause I dont want helmet-hair ;P

There is also an amazing Zero Gravity gadget you can wear. It totally makes it look like you are floating in space :)

Just grab a free spaceship, and you are ready to explore space!

Wheeee!

BTW, its a really, really bad idea to let a mermaid fly your spaceship ;P

There are all kinds of these space station thingies to explore :)

Like this one, with crops, farm animals, and a beautiful turquiose moon :)

Or spend the night at Hotel New California...

Walk on the moon...

Or visit the little town on Mars!

Day 515: Abyss Museum of Ocean Science

Ever wondered whats under the water (other than mermaids ;P)?

The Abyss is a museum/exhibit area dedicated to the underwater world. Its kinda like the Internation Spaceflight Museum. Except more mermaidy :)

They have lots of exhibits and information displays...

And lots of cool freebies, like an antique diving suit or this beanie cap ;)

But the cool part, of course, are the underwater exhibit areas...

Where you can go down to different depths without ever getting wet.

But whats the fun if you dont get wet?

Theres an Imagination Garden...sorta an underwater dating area for mermaids ;P

Ooo...ooo...thermal vents! My favorite underwater hotspot :)

Umm...whats that shiny thingie back there?

And there are lots of Human observation tubes, for viewing Humans underwater :)

Day 512: Sirena NEW Scripted Hairstyle (Flirtation)

Just finished another scripted hair I started a couple weeks ago...this one with a scripted butterfly clip that clips your hair back :)

Flirtation is Scripted! It's a flexi Long Hair with a Butterfly Hair Clip that clips several locks of your hair back from each side. To let your hair back down, just click on the the Butterfly Hair Clip to remove it :)

Day 493: Gossip Girl (New York Upper East)

Ive always wanted to visit New York City. The Gossip Girl TV show has created part of NY (the Upper East side) over 4 sims in SL :)

The sim was designed for fans of the Gossip Girl show. But of course, theres nothing stopping mermaids from sneaking around ;P

It looks like the real NY, at least from the movies Ive seen. It even has taxis and trucks that will run you over if you arent watching ;P

And even a nice little park in the middle of the city.

Would that be like Central Park? :P

The Gossip Girl sims were designed to promote the TV show, so you can visit some of the sites you see in the TV show.

I havent seen the show, but this is Chuck's home...def a guy's place :P

The Humphreys live in an artist's loft.

Ive always wanted to live in a loft!!!

Serena's place is definitely my favorite :)

They even have a boy's school :P

OK boys, pay attention! So who can tell me the best colors to go with lavender?

The Gossip Girl sims were designed for socializing. Fans of the show can actually sign up and enter SL via this sim.

And the main hangout seems to be the New York Chateau (SLURL: Warner Brothers (42,108,28)).

Day 489: NOMI Sculpted Prim Relief Maker

Ever wanted to make those 3D Bas-relief sculptures in Second Life? Or add some 3D effects to a flat picture?

Now you can, using sculpted prims and a program called NOMI.

NOMI is a commercial program from the creator of ROKURO, designed specifically for creating relief sculptures.

For example, you can take a flat picture...

(BTW, this was me at summer camp ;P)

and add some 3D effects. So in this case, I can even add a local light source to create new shadow effects in the painting :)

You can also make mini 3D maps, or some cool sculptures. You can check out the samples here: Hewes (168,130,79).

In this tutorial, I will show you how I added the 3D effects to this painting :)

Getting NOMI

NOMI is a commercial program. You can download a trial of NOMI and get for information here.

The trial version lets you try and work with NOMI for 3 days, but it does not let you actually create the sculpted prims. The full version is L$2980. You can purchase the full version at the NOMI serial box. The SLURL is Hewes (168,130,79).

Preparing the Texture

First, you need a picture. This mermaid painting is by JW Waterhouse, found on Wikipedia.

You should look for a picture where the light areas of the picture should come out, and the dark areas of the picture should be set back.

In this case, the body of the mermaid will come out, while the darker background will be set back.

Open the picture in Photoshop (or you can use your favorite drawing program).

Select "Image" from the top menu bar, select "Adjustments", and "Desaturate". This will turn the picture to black-and-white.

This black-and-white picture will be used to create the sculpted prim. A completely white area will be out all the way. A completely black area will be down all the way. And different shades of gray represents things in between.

Depending on your picture, you may want to play with the contrast. Of course, you can also grab a brush and just paint over an area :)

In this case, I am going to add a little blur to remove the cracks in the painting...

Select "Filter" from the top menu bar, then "Blur", and "Gaussian Blur...". At the Gaussian Blur window, enter "1.0" for Radius and click "OK".

Thats it! Our picture is ready.

Just save the picture, and we are ready to create our sculptie :)

Creating the Sculpted Prim with NOMI

Start the NOMI program.

Select "File" from the top menu bar, and "Load Base Picture...". In the Load Picture window, select the black-and-white picture we created above.

Click on the picture in the left side of the NOMI window and hold it. Now move the mouse until you have a slightly side view of the picture.

Next, adjust the "Relief Height" as needed. You should exaggerate the height a bit here, so you have something to work with once you import it into SL.

When you are ready, just select "File" from the top menu bar, and "Save Sculpted Prim..." option to save the sculpted prim.

We are ready to upload the sculpt map to SL!

BTW, you can also save it as an "OBJ" file, so you can import it into Wings 3D for some Tweaking before you upload the sculpt map into SL :)

Creating the Sculpted Prim

Go ahead and upload the sculpt map you created from NOMI to SL.

Rez a prim on the ground. Edit the prim and go to the Object tab.

Change the "Building Block Type" to "Sculpted".

Click on the square above "Sculpt Texture". At the "Pick:Sculpt Texture" window, select the sculpt map you just uploaded.

You should now have a bumpy wooden board ;P

Next, upload the original picture to SL (the color one).

Edit the prim and go to the Texture tab.

Click on the square above "Texture" and select the original picture you just uploaded.

Rotate the picture as needed.

If you picture is not a square, you will need to stretch one side of the prim to make the picture look right.

Because part of the sculpt map is for the sides and back of the sculptie, we need to adjust the color texture slightly to get a perfect fit.

At the Texture tab, enter the following settings:

   Repeats Per Face Horizontal (U): 1.200
   Repeats Per Face Vertical (V): 1.130

   Offset Horizontal (U): -0.100

Congratulations! You have just created a 3D version of your picture :)

You can adjust how bumpy the picture is by stretching the depth of the prim. So you can decide just how "3D" you like the picture ;P

Detailed Pictures

Sculpted prims are not very detailed. So if you have a very detailed picture, you may need to break down the picture into multiple sculpties.

For example, you can use a sculptie for the mermaid's face, another for her body, etc.

You can break up a picture using the grid in Photoshop. Try to make each section a square, since they are much easier to work with.

Day 486: Eternal Reflections

Its been a while since Ive visited a romantic garden sim (heehee and there are a few in SL ;P). I visited Secret Reflections and Midnight Reflections last year.

Since then, there are 2 new Reflections sims: Eternal Reflections and Fallen Reflections.

(Thanks "K" for the suggestion! :D)

Like any great romantic garden sim, Eternal Reflections has trees, flowers, streams, and poseballs everywhere :)

You and your date can stroll along the romantic trails that wind through waterfalls...

A black sand beach...

And snuggle in some cottages.

And if you are in the mood for dancing, stroll over the the neighboring Fallen Reflections sim...

Where theres a romantic jazz club.

You can go under a giant waterfall to find more places for dancing ;P

Of course, you could just sit on a yacht with your BF ;P

Day 484: Sirena NEW Hairstyle (Spirit)

Its Monday again...time for the new hairstyle :)

Spirit is a super long hair that reaches your heels! Its completly flexi, of course, and really gets messy when you move :)

Includes 2 different styles: One is sensitive to the SL wind, so your hair will fly with the wind (and have a mind of its own ;P). The second one is not wind-sensitive, for times when you want your hair to behave :)
