Day 580: David Rumsey Maps

OK, quick question: In the movie "Splash!", what was the first thing Madison did when she found Allen's wallet?
She looked up his address on an old map! (See, thats proof that some mermaids can read maps after all ;P)
If you love history or those cool-looking antique maps, you have to check out the David Rumsey Map sims in SL! :)
And just in case you arent that interested...there's lots of freebies here too :P
Stop by the 2nd floor of the main building to hear about David's story.
David Rumsey collected over 150,000 antique maps over 20 years, and his dream is to share his collection with the world. Part of his collection is online at his website.
Now he has set up a number of sims in SL to enable residents to see maps in a whole diff way :)
You can see a collection of maps from all over the world, and zoom in and move around. Like this one of San Francisco, for instance. Now, where's Linden Labs? :P
Then stop by the first floor and check out the amazing collection of 40 freebies!Just Right-click on any item and Buy for L$0.
Even these Orreries are free! (Thats the round whirly thingies that tell you where the planets are and stuff...had to look that up too :P)
Ooo...an old map of Paris... Im so heading over to Paris 1900 after this ;P
Even these cool globes are free...perfect decorations for your SL home ;)
And when you are done, dont forget to go outside and mark your hometown on the giant pushpin map.
Now, where is Atlantis...
Check out the breathtaking 3D display of Yosemite valley!
You can totally hike around without all the bugs and stuff :P
Or see a celestial globe...from the inside :)
So if youve never been here, definitely check out David Rumsey Maps. Click on Search, select Places, and enter "rumsey" as the keyword. The SLURL is Rumsey Maps 3 (115,74,55).

Yes! A great sim, and love the punk hair :)
Looks like somewhere I'll have to visit!
Caterin! Heehee nice to hear from you :) Lol do watch out for those silly mermaid ;P
Edward, heehee yep...definitely sounds like something you would be interested in...there are tons of cool maps, perfect for you to decorate with!
Hi! I love your tutorials! They help take the mystery out of Gimp and Wings and other designing programs, better than the manuals. Have you tried GimpShop? It (supposedly) gives Gimp the look and feel of Photoshop, although you can't use PS plugins.
Do you know Tokoroten? I'm trying to figure out how to tell it that I want a thin shape like a coin, as opposed to a cylinder type shape.
Any chance you show us how to make gemstone textures? I especially want stones like turquoise and opal, and more colors of clear stones, cos I want to make birthstone jewelry.
Another tutorial I'd like to see is how to make big floppy sleeves like on a graduation gown, or wizard robe, or Medieval dress. I've been trying to use a single tapered hollow flexi cylinder, but it goes right through the avie arm! Any advice?
Thanks in advance!
Firebird, you can adjust the thickness of a sculptie prim thinner inside SL, so you can make a cylinder, then squish it in SL :)
Lol Im not an expert at gemstone textures. But if you just need some, check out the texture stores (like Texture-r-us). They carry full-perm gemstone textures :)
As for big floppy sleeves, you can use a small flexi-skirt type design attached to the Forearm :)
Have fun!
Wow! Yes, Linden Lab is there, on Battery Street near Vallejo Street. Battery is on the upper right part of the map, two blocks from the piers.
Nightbird, heehee thats pretty cool! I wonder how long it would take before theres a virtual version of a city we can all walk around in...pretty spooky though :)
Eeep! That should read "lower right." Sorry!
Nightbird, no worries...lol I would never have known ;P
