Day 429: Scarlett in Steelhead

Well, fiddle-dee-dee! What is wrong with this here so-called modern transportation?

First I was stranded in Arizona. Now the train breaks down in Steelhead of the Oregon territories.

What in carnations is an Oregon territory anyhow?



And what on earth are all these gadgetry? There is the devil's work afoot here, I tell you!

Must be that band of ne're-do-well Steampunks!



Wagons! I do declare! This place is crawling with Gypsies and Steampunks!

I best be getting along before they use me for some bizarre Oregon rituals!



Why, this is more like it for a lady like myself. Finally, some sign of proper civilization!



Oh my! A grand ballroom for a grand ball :)



Why does every town west of the Mississippi have a saloon?

And oh! Have they never heard of perfume?

Day 426: Giant Snail Racing

Its silly, its slimy, and its a lot of fun!

Its Giant Snail Racing in Second Life :)



Today is the 3rd Anniversary of Giant Snail Racing.

This weekly time-honored um...sport started in the early days of SL, back in Nov 2004!



The Giant Snail avatars are provided free of charge to contestants :)

They are truly gigantic :P



At the start of the races, the contestants line up at the starting gate. Frothing at the mouth...literally *Eeeww* ;P



And race 3 laps around the course...



There are "flingers" that toss the giant snails in the air! And they occasionally miss...

Heehee, the races can be a bit messy! Its a lot of fun and laughs :)



And of course, fame and prizes await the fastest snail!

*Eeeeww* Did something slimy just drip on me?



After the races, join the contestants and fans to watch an instant replay of the event on SLCN Sports.

Day 424: Inspire Space Park (or Mermaid in Space)

I am Barbarella, Queen of the Galaxy!

OK, maybe Im just a mermaid in space...here at the Inspire Space Park :)



Inspire is a popular hangout and a meeting place.

There are poseballs all over the place for meditating or just relaxing in these comfy chairs :)

And its definitely a place to meet people. During busy SL times, it can be quite packed :)



The coolest things here are the "orbital" poseballs! You feel just like you are floating thru space. And there are orbital poseballs for couples too :)

Hmm...maybe I should take off my legs and put my fins back on :)



And of course, lots of areas for just sitting around watching the cute guys go by...

Umm...I meant checking out the sculpted prims... ;P



And like any good romantic spot, there are semi-private areas: Like your very own spaceship :)



And if you ever fall off the space platform, theres a wonderful beach below...

Day 422: Cocololo Island Resort

Thanks to April's suggestion, I decided to take a quick vacation at the romantic tropical Cocololo Resort :)

Not to mention checking out their wedding facilities. Not that anyone's asked. But its always good to be prepared :)



At the heart of Cocololo is The Plumeria. Its like one of those 5-star hotel/resorts where celebrities have their vacations!



Definitely posh :)



The resort has a wide range of activities, from water splash ride...



to boating...

Hey look! They have those funny metal tanks that humans wear underwater :)



to balloon rides...

*Eeeek* If fishes were meant to fly, we would have much bigger fins!



to skydiving, or just exploring this beautiful island on foot.

Day 421: Sirena 60 New Men's Hair Colors

Last week, there were 60 new colors for all the Women's hairs.


This week, its the guys' turn! 60 new colors for all the Men's hairs :)

Also, all Men's hairs now have larger sizes!


These 60 new colors completely replace the existing hair textures.

The new colors are more natural, with more depth and a subtle shine. Perfect for Men's hairs!

Also, all Men's hairs now have larger sizing. The (S)mall should fit Head Size 45-60, (M)edium should fit 60-80, and (L)arge should fit 80-100. The new Men's hairs should fit most men's heads out-of-the-box, without having to be resized :)

Day 419: Creating Poses Part 3 (Animation Priority)

In Creating Poses Part 1 and Part 2, we used QAvimator to create pose animations and placed the animation into an object (a purse).



In this Part 3 of the tutorial series, we are going to use multiple animations on our avatar at the same time. So you can burn your tongue on a hot cup of tea while wearing your purse :P This is made possible thru the use of Animation Priority.





Animation Priority Overview

Every animation in SL has an Animation Priority, from 0 to 4. An newly "Played" animation will override a running animation of equal or lower priority on a given body part.

For example, a animation with priority of 3 will override an animation with priority of 1 on the Right Forearm. A new animation with priority of 2 will override an existing animation with priority of 2 on the Left Forearm.



When your avatar is not Wearing any attachments that play animations, your avatar will use a set of SL "built-in" animations. You have probably seen your avatar go through his/her "built-in" stand poses many times.

Here is a list of all the SL "built-in" animations and their Animation Priorities from the LSL Wiki.

Note that most of the "built-in" animations have a priority of 2. While most of the standing, walking, or moving animations have a priority of 0.

So if you want your custom animation to always Play and override everything else, just set the Animation Priority to 4.

But if you want some "built-in" animations to work with your custom animation, then you have to pay more attention to the Animation Priority. For example, this is useful if you want the built-in "Typing" animation to work.



Testing Animation Priority



In Part 2 of this tutorial series, we created the "Hold Purse" pose animation and uploaded to Second Life.

When we uploaded the "Hold Purse" animation to SL, we selected an Animation Priority of 2.

Go ahead and Wear the purse containing the "Hold Purse" animation and the "Hold Purse Script". We are going to do a few things while we are Wearing the purse and see what happens :)

Also, be sure you take of any attachment or HUDs with animations. This includes shoes with Sexy Walk or avatar-based animations (for furries or mermaids :D). Just be a "normal" boring avatar Wearing a purse for a few minutes ;P




Typing (Priority 2)

If you open the Chat window and start typing something, your avatar should perform the normal "Typing" animation. Thats because "Typing" also has an Animation Priority of 2. So the newly played "Typing" animation would override the existing "Hold Purse" animation.




Walking (Priority 0)

Try walking while wearing your purse.

With the "normal" SL walk, your arm should be holding the purse while you walk. Thats because the normal "Walking" animation has an Animation Priority of 0. So the "Walking" animation does NOT override the "Hold Purse" animation that's running on your avatar's arm.




Sexy Walk (Priority 3/4)

Do you have an Animation Override gadget or a pair of shoes with Sexy Walk? Wear it and turn on only the Sexy Walk (but disable the "Stand" poses).

Now try walking while wearing your purse and the Sexy Walk.

You should see your arms drop down and do the Sexy Walk. When you resume your stand pose, your arms should go back to the "Hold Purse" animation. Most Sexy Walk animations have an Animation Priority of 3 or 4. So the Sexy Walk will override the "Hold Purse" animation.


Facial Animations



Did you know your avatar has teeth? You do brush your teeth, dont you? ;P

Second Life has a number of "built-in" facial expressions/animations. They are in the Animation Priorities list with names starting with "express_" (like "express_smile").

We cannot create/upload custom facial animations. The only ones available are the ones built-into SL. Fortunately, theres quite a list to choose from!

The easiest way to play facial expressions is use Yadni's EmoterHUD.



You can pick up the EmoterHUD for free from Yadni's Junkyard (Search/Places for "yadni"). The "YadNi s EMOTERHUD v3.1" is in the "Freebie of the Month" area. Its been in the "Freebie of the Month" area since I joined SL over a year ago ;P



To use the EmoterHUD, open your Inventory window, look for the "EmoterHUD v3.1", and Wear it.

Now, just click on one of the blue faces to play an animation. You can even play multiple facial expressions at the same time (it gets pretty weird ;P)



Combining Animations



As you can see, your avatar can perform a number of different animations at the same time. The Animation Priority determines which animation would be used for each Body Part on your avatar!

So it's possible for your avatar to play a facial expression, hold something, and do a Sexy Walk.

Note that Animation Override (AO) and multiple animations will cause lag. So dont try this in a busy sim!

But when you have a moment, give it a try. Understanding Animation Priority is important if you want to design poses and animations!

Besides, you would be amazed at all the things your avatar can do at the same time :)

Day 417: Dive World

I was just swimming around today, minding my own business (hey, I can do that too! :P)

When I bumped into this place my friend Samm told me about... (thank you Samm!)



Ooo...look at the pretty lagoon :)



Hey, those are the funny tank thingies that humans wear underwater :P

Wow, they are giving them away for free!



Of course, the cool parts are underwater :)



There are beautiful corals and wrecks...



Even a nice little swimming trail :)



Oh...oh...and they have one of those rooms where you can watch humans underwater without their breathing thingies :) They sorta look just like humans above water though :P



The Dive World sim is operated by PADI, a group of humans who like those underwater tank thingies :P Bring a friend, grab a thingie, and explore underwater together :)

Day 415: Fairytale Gardens of Sinano

Well, it's about time that blonde mermaid made some cool hair colors for me! Yep, this is Talia, the gorgeous evil Alt :)

Im at the Fairytale Gardens of Sinano. And Blue Poseball is known to hang out at garden sims... ;P

Honestly, I dont know why Blue wastes his time with that fake blonde!

Day 414: Sirena 60 New Women's Hair Textures

Over the last few months, I really appreciated all the generous feedback from you!

A great hair deserves a great texture. And I wanted every texture in every hair pack to be great! So Ive worked hard to improve the Sirena hair textures...



Announcing 60 Brand NEW hair textures for ALL women's hairs at Sirena :)

These 60 new textures completely replace the existing hair textures.

The new textures look more natural, with more depth and a subtle shine. Also, ALL Sirena women's hairs now have built-in Face Lighting to keep you in the best light.

The Color Packs


There are now 15 color packs, with 4 colors each.

In general, all of the textures have more depth and contrast. Also, the highlights have been toned down to give them a more realistic appearance.

The Black and Blonde packs have only minor changes. There is a new Grey color in the Black pack. And there is a second tip pack for both Black and Blonde, with more choices for tips.

The Brown and Red packs have the most changes. Their colors have been adjusted to make them more natural.

There are 3 new color packs: White, Sparks, and Pastel.


The White pack features white and white-tipped hairs all in one pack: White, White with Grey tip, White with Black tip, and Black with White tip.


The Sparks pack is a bright, multi-color tipped texture designed to get noticed :) Each has a natural colored base: Blonde Sparks, Red Sparks, Brown Sparks, and Black Sparks.


The Pastel pack has soft pastel/baby colors: Blue Pastel, Green Pastel, Pink Pastel, and Yellow Pastel.

Day 412: Center for Aesthetic Inquiry

I want to be a good Mommy! So Im taking my baby drakelet, Poof, to an art gallery today. Its important for baby dragons to have a well-rounded education :)



The Center of Aesthetic Inquiry is a complete sim dedicated to Full Immersion Hyperformalism. Umm...I think thats like Modern Art ;P

The Center recommends that you make a bunch of changes to your SL settings. They really do make a difference to your experience! Just grab a notecard so you remember how to un-do the changes afterwards :)

And be sure to grab a Flight Feather while you are here. It will let you fly around the exhibits above 200M!

Poof, get down from my head! You are totally messing up my hair!



As soon as you make those changes to your SL program, you will be treated to an amazing sight!



You can explore the Center by flying around, or by using these red chairs. These red chairs are everywhere. Just click on a red chair for a menu of 10 highlight places.

And if you see a sign with the 2 white arrows, just walk up to it. It will open up with info about a nearby display :)



The Center is filled with modern art sculptures and paintings, most are moving and changing all the time...

Most displays take advantage of Second Life to create new forms of art! Like this painting that totally makes me dizzy...

Day 410: Stratos Legend (Bones of the Dinosaurs)

Hidden on the island of Stratos Legend, away from the Mainland, is a secret place where dinosaurs roamed...



Today, you can still find the bones of these giants in this mysterious land...



Where dinosaurs used to do battle with one another...



Or perish from the dangers of the island.



There are all manners of dinosaurs here, from walking, flying, to swimming. All preserved in exquisite detail.



There are even dinosaur eggs to be found!

Well, you should know by now that I have a thing for garden sims. (Cause thats where my BF Blue Poseball likes to hang out ;P)

Day 405: Creating Poses Part 2 (Animations in Objects)

In Creating Poses Part 1, we used QAvimator to create a simple pose animation and uploaded it to Second Life.



Whats the one thing that we cant live without in Real Life, but rarely use in Second Life?

Our purses, of course :)

Like most accessories, purses/handbags are prim attachments. They are typically attached to the shoulders or hands.

If we attached a purse to our shoulder, it would just magically hang there (and never slip off no matter what we are doing). Also, it would move around oddly while we go thru different stand poses.



Wouldnt it be nice if our arm is positioned properly whenever we Wear the purse?

In this Part 2 of the tutorial series, we will do just that! We create a pose animation and put it into a purse. So whenever you Wear the purse, your arms will automatically hold the purse :)

We are going to create a pose animation that positions our avatar's shoulder, arm, and hands to hold the purse. This will keep the purse in place and stop our shoulder from moving because of the built-in stand poses.

We will put this animation into the purse, along with a script, so that the animation will automatically Play whenever we Wear the purse.



To complete this part of the tutorial, you will need a free box from Yadni's Junkyard (Search/Places for "yadni"). The box is on the 2nd floor of the freebie wall. Its labeled "111 FREE CLOTHES ACCESSORIES AND JEWELS -03/07-". Just Buy it for L$0 :)


Ready to create the animation? :)


Create the Animation



Important Note: This animation may look slightly different on your avatar! This is because each avatar has a slightly different shape (height, arm length, etc.). But if this pose doesnt look perfect on your avatar, you can always adjust the purse or the pose :)

Go ahead and start the QAvimator program. The steps for setting it up are in Part 1 of this tutorial series.



Make sure that the "Figure" setting is set to "female" (sorry guys, you have to figure out your own purses ;P).

Change the number of frames from 30 to 2 at the bottom of the window. It should read "Frame 2 of 2" when you are done.



Click on the avatar's Left Collar (or "lCollar"). This is the small area between the avatar's upper arm and neck.

Change the "Y Rotation" to "6".

Change the "Z Rotation to "-10".



Now do the same thing for the Left Shoulder, Left Forearm, and Left Hand. Here are the settings:

   lShldr X:3 Y:36 Z:-60

   lForeArm X:0 Y:-123 Z:-2

   lHand X:23 Y:-5 Z:-9



Make sure that the ONLY body parts you move are the lCollar, lShldr, lForeArm, and lHand! This is because we dont want to override any other avatar animations (like walking or breathing).

Only these 4 body parts should have a little bump in the lower left window.



Click on "File" from the top menu bar. Select the "Save As..." option.

At the "Save Animation File" window, type in "Hold Purse.bvh" in the File name box. Note that you HAVE to type in the ".bvh" part of the name!





Upload and Testing the Pose

Its time to try out our new pose :)



Start the Second Life program.

Select the "File" option from the SL top menu bar. Select the "Upload Animation (L$10)..." option.

At the Preview window, change the "Priority" to 2. We will talk more about Animation Priority in the next Part of this tutorial series.

Click on the "Loop" checkbox (because we want to play our pose indefinitely).

Change the "Hand Pose" to "Left Fist". This will turn our left hand into a fist most of the time (unfortunately, this doesnt work very reliably).

Finally, press the "Play" button to see a preview of the pose.

If everything looks good, click on the "Upload (L$10)" button to upload the animation! (Note: this will cost L$10!)



Next, look in your Inventory for the "111 Free Clothes Accessories and Jewels-02/07-" folder you picked up from Yadni's Junkyard.



Pick one of the "Side Purse". You can get a quick list by typing "purse" into the Inventory Search bar.

Right-click on the "Side Purse" and select "Wear".

Optional: Type "bling off" in the Chat window before you go blind from the bling ;P

Extra Credit: Hunt down the prim with the "bling" script and remove it to reduce lag from the listener :) Just make sure you do "bling off" before removing the script!



Look for the "Hold Purse" animation in your Animation folder. Right-click on it and select "Play in World".

You should now be holding your new designer purse in style ;P





Create the Hold Purse Script

OK...now that we have a pose that works, we need to put it in our purse.

We will need a script to "Play" our pose whenever we Wear it.



Open your Inventory window. Select "Create" from the top menu bar and select "New Script".

Change the name of the script to "Hold Purse Script".







Double-click on the "Hold Purse Script" to open the Script editing window.

Replace everything in the Script editing window with this new script below:

Click "Save" in the Script editing window to save the script and close it.


Put Animation in Purse

Now that we have all the components, lets put them in the purse!



Go ahead and Wear the purse.













Right-click on the purse and go to the "Contents" tab.

Drag-and-drop the "Hold Purse" animation from your Inventory into the Contents tab of the purse.

Drag-and-drop the "Hold Purse Script" from your Inventory into the Contents tab of the purse.

Right-click on the purse and select Detach.










The next time you Wear your purse, your arms will automatically be positioned to hold it :)

Thats it! You are now ready to do some serious shopping :)

Day 403: Kenroku-en Garden

I hope you had a wonderful Halloween! :)



With the Autumn leaves turning red, this is the perfect time for a garden sim!

Welcome to Kenroku-en Garden!

(Thank you so much for this amazing landmark, Alice :D)



According to the website, there is a Real Life Kenroku-en Garden in the Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan.

If you dont happen to live near the Ishikawa Prefecture, then you can catch a glimpse of this magical place in SL :)



The first thing you will probably notice about Kenroku-en are the brilliant colors on the trees!



Theres a lake with streams and paths running thru the garden. It makes you want to just sit and meditate all day long :)



And definitely check out the amazing details and textures in this sim!

There are Sulpties everywhere! The trees, the bamboo-lined pathways, and even the goldfishes are Sculpties ;P

Even the shadows move on the ground :) That seems to be the new trend in SL ;P



The cool thing is that the foliage colors and sounds will change with the seasons!

Theres a calendar near the entrance that shows all the different changes thru the year :)



And right next door is the Kanazawa Castle...



Heres your chance to step inside a historic Japanese castle!

They certainly used a lot of sculptie prims back in the old days! ;P
