Day 401: Toxic Garden

I heard about this cool new flower garden, created by the same people who did Greenies Home. So how can I resist a romantic date with my Blue Poseball? :)

Umm...what do they mean by Anti-Toxin pack?

Do they come in different colors? ;P

Wow, this looks like a pretty garden!

Heehee its a bit of a jungle with all these giant vines!

Theres even an old broken-down chapel...how romantic :)

Say...whats with the weird green fog?

Umm...are the vines moving? Or is it my imagination?

OMG...theres a weird plant monster loading that train...

Ooo...pretty greenhouse!

Whats that? Help! Giant ants! Giant ants!!!

Toxic Garden is a richly detailed adventure sim. You receive a Notecard with a background story about the sim. There are secret areas, tunnels, and lots of interesting sights. But its definitely not your typical SL flower garden ;P

Oh, BTW, theres lots of ways to die here. Thankfully, you just get sent Home if you die. But it makes exploring and taking pictures much more interesting ;P Just be sure you wear your Anti-Toxin armbands and avoid those ants :)

For an interesting SL adventure, check out the Toxic Garden :) Click on Search, select Places, and enter "toxic garden" as the keyword. The SLURL is Toxic Garden Rezzable (128,11,7).

Excuse me Mr. One-Eyed Plant, did you see anyone eat my boyfriend Blue Poseball?

Im getting worried: I was supposed to meet him here and I cant find him anywhere in the sim!

Day 398: Zero Point

Zero Point is one of the Second Life Galleries. Its undoubtedly one of the best light and texture displays in Second Life, and an amazing exhibit of modern art.

If you have never played with Glow Rendering (or Renderglow), this is a good place to try :) Check out this Glow Rendering Tutorial on the SL Wiki.

Zero Point's ground floor is just a small part of the exhibit. All the cool stuff is up in the air :) So be sure to use these teleporters to see all the floors.

BTW, the ground floor is called "Reality". That should tell you something about this place ;P

Did I mention light and texture? :)

Everywhere you turn, there are amazing displays of color, lights, and movement.

Some are long corridors that you walk thru. Some others are sculptures.

A few are even interactive, and will do something if you Touch them :)

Like this evil king's throne...just try sitting in it ;P

And dont forget to take the elevator rides...

They are not your normal elevators :)

Every floor here has loads of dazzling exhibits!

Heehee they mean it :)

Its definitely one of the coolest rides in SL! Dont miss it :)

And dont forget to stop by the Shopping Platform and see more of the artist's works on sale.

Does this equipment work with mermaids?

Im so going to get helmet hair from this! :(

You definitely have to check out the hydrogen display!

Theres a TP from the hydrogen car display that takes you to a race track where you can drive your own hydrogen car :)

Day 391: Creating Poses Part 1 (Standing Pose)

Can I tell you a mermaid secret?

Mermaids have a tail. So, we have to always keep our legs together :) Thats not easy to do in SL, because all the animations assume human legs!

So everything a mermaid does requires special poses and animations. From floating around to swimming to flying. Even sitting on the ground like this requires a pose.

So sooner or later, a mermaid gets the urge to make her own poses and animations :)

Fortunately, creating poses for SL is easy and fun. And best of all, there are some wonderful free programs available. So all it would cost are the SL L$10 upload fees (thats less than 4 US cents per upload).

In this tutorial, we are going to use QAvimator to create a simple standing pose. We will upload this pose to SL and try it out on our avatar :)

Overview

Animations are typically those items that sit in the "Animations" folder in your Inventory. They have a little "running person" picture next to them.

Animations do what their name suggests: they animate your avatar. Animations can be a simple walk, a dance, acrobatics, or a mermaid swimming :)

To use an animation in your Inventory, just Right-click on an animation and select "Play in World".

You can put animations into poseballs, avatar attachments (like shoes), or into an Animation Override (AO) gadget.

So animations are really useful for bringing life to your avatar! :)

There are some additional information about SL animation in the SL Wiki.

Poses

Poses are special types of animations. Poses freeze the avatar in a fixed position. This is great for taking pictures or looking into your BF's eyes ;P

A pose consists of 2 frames:

The first frame is the Reference Frame. This is used by SL as a reference point.

The second frame is the actual pose. SL will move any body part that is in a different position than the Reference Frame.

Any body part that has not changed from the Reference Frame will continue to go thru the normal avatar movements (like breathing or shifting legs). So if you do not move the avatar chest in the second frame, then your avatar will continue to breath normally.

(Note: This can be adjusted by setting the Priority of the animation. See the SL Wiki for more details)

Hips

The avatar's hips are the most important part of any frame. The hips determine the avatar's position relative to her position at the start of the animation.

All of the avatar's other body parts are positioned relative to the hips. So the hips are truly the most important body part on the avatar!

If you move the hips, the avatar's position will change. For example, if you move the avatar's hips up 1M, the entire avatar will be shifted up by 1M. This will look like the avatar just jumped up into the air!

Moving the hips are essential for animations that move around, like walking or dancing.

If you do not move the hips, the avatar's position will not change relative to her position at the start of the animation. For this part of the tutorial, we will only move the hips a little bit (to stop the avatar from shifting around).

Downloading and Installing QAvimator

QAvimator is a program specifically designed to create poses and animations for Second Life. The best part is that its free :)

You can download the latest version at www.QAvimator.org. The QAvimator site does warn that the project is in early alpha stage and may or may not work on your system...

Download and install the proper version of QAvimator on your computer. For this tutorial, I am using the April 19, 2007 version of QAvimator.

Once you start the program, you are all set to create animations for Second Life :)

Using QAvimator

QAvimator is pretty easy to use (this is coming from a blonde mermaid ;P). There are only a couple things you need to know for this tutorial: How to adjust a body part, and how to change the camera view (so you can see better).

Lets play around with QAvimator first to get used to the basics...

QAvimator lets you move your avatar around just like an intricate doll. You can move each body part individually in the X, Y, and Z directions.

To move a body part, first click on it to select it (like the upper right arm in the picture).

You can then move the body part by moving the slider control on the right, or typing in a number.

If you are wondering what X, Y, and Z stands for...well, I dont know. I just move them until the body part goes the right way. Thats probably easier than trying to figure them out :P

Thats it! Thats all you do to create a pose in QAvimator: select each body part, and move the X/Y/Z until it looks right. Easy, isnt it? :)

You can also change the camera view so you can get a better look at different parts of the avatar.

The controls work sorta like SL...

To zoom in or out, press and hold the [Alt] key. Then click and hold on an area outside of the avatar. Now move the mouse forward to zoom in. Pull the mouse back to zoom out. You can also move the mouse to the left and right. This works almost like the Alt camera in SL.

To rotate, press and hold the [Ctrl] key. Click and hold on an area outside of the avatar. Now you can rotate your view by moving the mouse around.

To pan your view, press and hold the [Shift] key. Click and hold on an area outside of the avatar. Now you can pan your view by moving the mouse around.

If your camera gets like totally messed up, just press the "Reset camera view to default position" button :)

You are now a QAvimator expert ;P

So lets make a pose!

Creating a Pose

We are going to create a simple pose that positions both hands in front to hold an object, like a candle.

(Im so going to get on Santa's "Good" List this year! ;P)

Lets start with a new screen!

Click on "File" from the top menu bar and select "New".

Make sure that the "Figure" setting is set to "female" (the X, Y, Z values I provide below would be different for a "male" avatar).

Change the number of frames from 30 to 2 at the bottom of the window. It should read "Frame 2 of 2" when you are done.

Click on the avatar's "Hips".

Go to the "Position" setting on the right side of the window. Change the "X Position" to 0.1.

This small change will freeze the avatar's hips, and will stop her from shifting thru the "normal" stand poses.

Click on the avatar's Left Collar (or "lCollar"). This is the small area between the avatar's upper arm and neck.

Change the "Y Rotation" to "-25".

Change the "Z Rotation to "-23".

Click on the avatar's Left Upper Arm (or "lShldr"). Change the settings as follows:

   X Rotation: -12
   Y Rotation: -29
   Z Rotation: -33

Click on the avatar's Left Forearm (or "lForeArm"). Change the settings as follows:

   X Rotation: 8
   Y Rotation: -87
   Z Rotation: 2

Click on the avatar's Left Hand (or "lHand"). Change the settings as follows:

   X Rotation: -20
   Y Rotation: 0
   Z Rotation: 0

Now do the same thing on the avatar's right side, starting with the avatar's Right Collar (or "rCollar") and working down to the Right Hand (or "rHand"). Here are the settings:

   rCollar X:0 Y:20 Z:16

   rShldr X:7 Y:29 Z:47

   rForeArm X:-8 Y:92 Z:3

   rHand X:-5 Y:-4 Z:-23

Finally, we need to move the thighs and shins slightly to keep them from shifting around.

Click on the Left Thigh (or "lThigh"). Change the "X Rotation" to "-1".

Click on the Left Shin (or "lShin"). Change the "X Rotation" to "-1".

Repeat the same thing with the Right Thigh and Right Shin:

   rThigh X:-1

   rShin X:-1

Thats it! Our pose is now ready to be saved and uploaded to SL :)

Click on "File" from the top menu bar. Select the "Save As..." option.

At the "Save Animation File" window, type in "Hold Candle Pose.bvh" in the File name box. Note that you HAVE to type in the ".bvh" part of the name!

Upload and Testing the Pose

Now comes the fun part! We get the try out our new pose :)

Go into Second Life.

Select the "File" option from the SL top menu bar. Select the "Upload Animation (L$10)..." option (bet you never thought you would use this ;P).

At the Preview window, change the "Priority" to 4. This gives your pose the highest priority over other animations (from normal avatar movements to other AO's you are wearing).

Click on the "Loop" checkbox (because we want to play our pose indefinitely).

Change the "Hand Pose" to "Fist". This will turn our hands into fists most of the time (the hands will still occasionally open...theres no way to control that in SL).

Finally, press the "Play" button to see a preview of the pose.

If everything looks good, click on the "Upload (L$10)" button to upload the animation! (Note: this will cost L$10!)

Now, just look for the "Hold Candle Pose" animation in your Animation folder. Right-click on it and select "Play in World" :)

You can hold an object by attaching it to one of your hands (like a candle or a flower).

Congratulations! You are now an animator :)

Creating good poses require some fine tuning. So you will often have to upload a pose, make some small changes, and upload again until it looks right. For example, for this tutorial, it took me 5 uploads to get the hand positions correct :)

So dont be shy about uploading to SL. If you dont want to pay the L$10 upload fee, a couple residents have suggested the Beta Grid. I havent tried this method, but it sounds like it would work. You can download the Beta Grid SL Program here.

Good luck and have fun making those poses!

Now, where can I find a Christmas tree to stand on? ;P

Day 389: Metabirds

Its Talia, the gorgeous evil Alt! :)

This is such a sexy hair, I couldnt let that fake blonde mermaid do the blog entry! She would have totally ruined it by wearing some Victorian outfit or something ;P

Today I went to check out the Metabirds Japanese sims...

Metabirds is a Japanese company. It looks like they own a group of 7 sims and help Japanese companies build stuff.

Beautiful, isnt it? Oh...and theres a train station over there too. :P

The Metabirds sims are a mixture of residental and commercial sims, with a lot of common areas.

The newest Metabirds sim is Central Station, which is an amazingly detailed train station.

Their trains actually have scheduled departure times. It feels just like you are in a train station when you walk around! Except it smells much better :)

When you walk around the Metabirds sims, it feels like you are in a crowded city.

What sets these sims apart are the incredible details everywhere. Even the malls are amazing!

OK...maybe its because I dont understand anything here :P

Ooo...look how green their grass is... ;P

And they really have the coolest stores :)

Theres like tons of stuff for Nekos (they are Japanese sims after all!) ;P

Oh, and definitely check out the Jetstream Pavilion in Ginza! Jetstream is a company that makes pens. They have a tube where you fly thru something like a 3D pen commercial :P

Not to mention flying around on your free jet pen :)

Complete instructions in Japanese ;P

Even the coffee shops here are cute!

OMG, did I just say "cute"? Whats that mermaid doing to me???

Look...cool sculptie stuff at the BizIsland sim. With some cool freebies :)

Theres even a whole convention center, concert stages, and several art galleries...

For something totally different (unless you are Japanese ;P) check out the Metabirds sims. The Metabirds Central Train Station is a good place to start. Click on Search, select Places, and enter "central station" as the keyword. The SLURL is Central Station (152,89,25).

Wow, this is the control room for like the whole train system :)

Hmmm...a big Red Button in a glass box. With a skull-and-crossbones label. Its just totally asking for it! ;P

Day 387: Everwind

The Medieval fantasy sims of Everwind are hidden behind a secret portal: You will need a password to unlock your way...

Try reading the Notecard on the sim rules ;P

(Thank you Alice for the Landmark :D)

Behind the portal lies 3 magical sims, fantasy creatures, and an amazingly active role-playing community...

If you wish to participate in the role-playing, there are a selection of free items at the arrival area.

Everwind also welcomes explorers (and mermaids ;P). Just wear one of these backpacks (or a visitor tag) to let other residents know you are exploring...

Like most role-playing sims, the town is the center of this community. And theres usually a group of folks hanging around town :)

Of course, the fun is to join the community and participate in the role-playing! Everwind has an excellent library with all the info you will need :)

Everwind has different areas set aside for each race.

Heehee the Elves always get the prettiest gardens ;P

OK...maybe the Faerie Gardens are prettier... :)

Then theres this dreamy castle too, where the humans live...

And up in the sky, where the dragons live at the Dragon Weyr :)

OK, I have no idea which is prettier ;P

And if you like a fun challenge, there is a cool sim-wide quest that starts here :)

But its definitely not the evil castle ;P

You can even practice magic with the local Mage Guild :)

If you like fantasy role-playing, exploring pretty sims, or a place to take cool pix, check out Everwind! Click on Search, select Places, and enter "everwind" as the keyword. The SLURL is Woods (199,94,703).

Oh, I see white clouds...a face...and...and...something blue and round in my future...

Hey, Blue Poseball! Get out of my crystal ball!

Day 386: Sirena 2 Women/1 Men's Hairstyles (Free Sculptie Pumpkins)

Have you done your Halloween decorations yet? Its not too late to get ready for those trick-or-treaters ;P

Since visiting Octoberville and the Haunted Cave, I wanted to add some decorations to the Sirena store. So I made some Sculptie Pumpkins :)

You can pick up some free Sculptie Pumpkins to decorate your own home or sim! Just click on the "Free Pumpkins" sign next to this Halloween display at the Sirena store :)

Jasmine makes you look and feel like a princess :) It has a braided front, strips of hair swept to the back, and falling down in a cascade of flexis.

Jasmine comes with the Forehead Jewel on a decorated chain! (Ive wanted to make one of these forever :D) The jewels are color-change, of course. The perfect hair for a ball or any formal occasion! Just be sure to leave by Midnight ;P

Fernanda (after Brazilian model Fernanda Prada) is a full-bodied hair thats so fashionable this season. Fernanda has sensuous flexis all around, with extra curls and strands for that tousled look :)

Comes with hair extensions to add extra volume to the hair. Fernanda can be worn with or without the hair extensions for 2 different looks :)

Philippe is a long flexi hair designed specifically for men. The hair is flexi all around and comes down past the chest! Its a hair for guys who really move around :)

These Sirena hairstyles include built-in Face Lighting so you always look your best. Just try on a demo and see the difference!

All hairstyles come in 3 sizes, (S)mall, (M)edium, and (L)arge for easy fitting and adjustment.

There are 48 textures in 12 color packs to choose from. And all hairs can be color-tinted (with 66 colors) to give you even more color choices!

Check them out online at www.SirenaHair.com or at Sirena Hair & Fashion. Click on Search, select Places, and enter "sirena" as the keyword. The SLURL is West Sunset (160,50,22).

OMG, what do I wear for Halloween?

I have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear! ;P

Day 384: Isle of Tranquility

Warning: This is a mermaid post! :)

Somewhere in the Sea of Basiat is the little Isle of Tranquility.

This little island welcomes visitors with its pretty scenery...

(Thank you so much, Alice, for giving me the tip about this wonderful island :D)

Beautiful beaches and garden-like setting for couples to explore.

Heehee, but theres a reason this is a mermaid post :P

When you first arrive, theres a notecard that tells you about this Treasure Hunt :)

Just up the hill, theres this little mound of dirt. If you Touch it, it will give you a key and a clue to find the next mound of dirt...

If you are not a mermaid, be sure to bring your underwater breathing thingies :)

The island is surrounded by a beautiful underwater area. And the clues will eventually lead you underwater :)

If youve never gone in the water before, this is a good place to start :)

There are buildings, private areas, and secret passages...

Hidden tunnels that run under the island...

And mounds in the most unexpected places.

Theres even cool little puzzles to solve...

...for a couple different treasures to be won :)

If you love to play in the water, definitely come check out the Isle of Tranquility. And if you know a mermaid, you *HAVE* to tell her about this place! :)

Click on Search, select Places, and enter "isle of tranquility" as the keyword. The SLURL is Yemaya (128,125,21).

No, Blue Poseball darling. Theres no such things as mermaids! Its just a silly hoax to lure guys underwater ;P

Day 382: Liquid Heat Haunted Cave (or I Know What You Did This Halloween)

I stopped by Liquid Heat's Halloween sim today to...um...check out their sculptie caves.

You know how much I like sculpties, right? ;P

Hey...theres a big hole in that cave! I fell right thru it! :(

You want me to go *THAT* way?

A foggy cornfield at night...

Say...didnt I see this in some horror movie? Isnt this where the psycho killer jumps out at the blonde?

Ahhhh!!! Its not a psycho killer movie! This is a monster movie!!!

*Whew* I found this nice little coal cart. Maybe I can hide in the cave...

Do monsters eat blondes?

Heehee Look! Shes wearing the Grudge hair :P

Wow, its just like the ballroom from the haunted mansion at Disneyland! :)

OMG the monster is busy eating another resident!

And the blonde gets away...this time...

Of course, there will be sequels: I Still Know What You Did Last Halloween, etc. ;P

The Haunted Cave shows off the skills of the artists at Liquid Heat. Its something fun to do between now and Halloween, either alone or preferably with friends :)

Plus Liquid Heat has a schedule of events at the sim, so you can come back and party with the monsters :P

To visit the Haunted Cave, click on Search, select Places, and enter "liquid heat". The SLURL is Tahiti (206,241,52).

Blue, Im telling you! It was so scary! Thank goodness monsters dont eat blondes!

Um...whats that black thing in the trees? This isnt a ghost story, is it? :P

Day 380: Aglarond

'Quel re!

Heehee, thats Elven for "G'day" (I learned it from an Australian Elf ;P)

Atop a mountain behind magical waterfalls and beaches rests the Elven Fortress of Aglarond...

The Fortress is the center of a diverse community of Middle Earth and medieval fantasy creatures. From Humans to Elves, Dwarves, Fae, even Mermaids (yes...we were there! Frodo just never went to the beach ;P)

Aglarond is not a full role-playing sim, so you can simply explore without participating in role-playing. They only ask that you wear medieval period clothing (freebies available in case you dont have any) and respect others.

And Aglarond is a large sim, with a lot of levels and hidden areas :)

The Fortress itself houses a gorgeous ballroom...

And The Baths, done up in Egyptian-style...

They even have massages available! :P

If you are looking for some privacy, there are many areas throughout Aglarond, particularly in the Caves of Aglarond...

For warriors, theres the Combat Arena for competitions.

And for the aspiring wizard, theres the Mage Guild for magical challenges :)

For those who want to join in the community, you can even rent a house in Aglarond Village :)

Theres special areas for different groups, like this one for Faes...

Its official: Autumn is upon us and the leaves are changing colors :)
The State of Vermont even has a Foliage Forecaster (thats like their thing :P)

So this week, I made a couple of free spirited hairs...cause Halloween is just around the corner :)

So what exactly are free spirited hairs?

Bridget is a long free flowing hair. Its long all around! And it's completely flexi, even the full-bodied front :) Perfect for dancing or moving around!

Comes with a blinged up sculptie heart: not SL bling, but "bling bling" as in covered with rhinestones. Color changing, of course :)

Kensie is a cute style with just the right amoung of flexis in the tails for the look this season :) Tied with a couple of detachable color-change scrunchies for different looks...

Day 377: Creating Goth Avatar Skin Part 2

Isn't the view beautiful? It takes my breath away. Well, it would if I had any...

In Part 1 of the Avatar Skin series, we started working on a Goth-type skin (specifically, the Corpse Bride :D). We created a base set of skin textures and applied it to our avatar.

In this Part 2 of the series, we are going to put some finishing touches on the skin textures and make them look more...err...presentable ;P We will be concentrating on the Head texture, since that is the most noticeable area for most skins (unless you are stripping ;P). Since there are numerous Photoshop tutorials and books, I will avoid going into Photoshop-specific techniques and concentrate on SL-specific things.

Overview

Thanks to the Shading layer in Robin Wood's head template, we already have some nicely defined facial features (like the nose, cheeks, and lips).

You may not notice the Shading layer, but heres what our texture would look like if we turned off the Shading layer! Quite a difference, isnt it?

But our Tutorial skin textures are still a bit...scary (and not in a good way :P). Theres a very noticeable gap between the head and the neck. The eyebrows and eyelashes doesnt quite match her...umm...complexion. And even though Emily is suppose to be a corpse, she still needs a bit of color :)

So we are going to fix these things up :)

Avatar Skins and Seams

Unlike clothing, Avatar Skins are not suppose to have seams. Unfortunately, there are many places where one part of a texture joins with another. When the colors dont match up at these joints, you will notice a seam.

Expensive 3D programs (like Lightwave, Modo, etc.) will let you draw directly on a 3D model (once you figure out how to use them :P). Then you can get as fancy as you like with the seams :)

But since I cant afford these 3D programs, I have to do the next best thing: make sure the colors match up at the joints using Photoshop.

To make good skin textures (or clothing textures), you need to know where these seams are and how they match up. The absolute best way to understand how these seams work is to Wear the texture templates.

Again, Robin Wood has kindly provided these texture templates for free in SL. Heres my blog entry on where to get these texture templates and how to use them.

For making skin, you should Wear the template called "R(S)W UV Map Skin".

Cleaning up the Neck Joint

Go ahead and re-open the "Tutorial Head.psd" file we created in Part 1 of this tutorial series.

Go to the top of the Layers palette and select the "Shading" layer. Change the Opacity from 30% to 100% so we can work on it.

There are 3 areas in the Head Texture that joins up with the Upper Body Texture.

If you look at the bottom edges of these 3 areas, you can see that the shade of grey changes along the edge. Thats whats causing the seam! So we are going to use the same shade of grey along the edge.

Click on the foreground color square. Enter the color values for the same grey we used on the Upper Body Texture: Red = 90, Green = 90, Blue = 90.

Click on the Brush tool and select the 13 pixel brush.

Draw a line across the bottom edges of all 3 areas. Take care not to touch the top areas of the head.

Next, click on the Smudge Tool. Select a 13 pixel brush. Set the Strength to 25%.

Blend the 3 lines you drew into the rest of the layer using the Smudge Tool. Be sure that you smudge up from the lines (not down from the Shading layer). This helps to blend the lines into the rest of the Shading layer.

Finally, go back to the Layers palette. Make sure the Shading layer is selected. Change the Opacity from 100% back to 30%.

There! The neck looks much better now, doesnt it? :)

Eyebrows

The eyebrows and eyelashes on the template may look OK for a newbie human, but they just dont look right for Emily! So we are going to replace the eyebrows and fix the eyelashes.

First, lets do the Eyebrows...

Go to the Layers palette. Select the "Eyebrows & Eyelashes" layer near the top.

Change the Blend Mode from "Multiply" to "Normal". You should now see the eyelashes and eyebrows against a white background.

Click on the foreground color square and select white for the foreground.

Click on the Brush tool, and select a 19 pixel brush.

Then just simply erase both eyebrows using your brush.

Go back to the Layers palette. Change the Blend Mode from "Normal" back to "Multiply".

In the Layers palette, scroll down to the "UVs" layer. Click on the "eye" on the left side to make it visible. This makes the grid lines visible, so you can figure out where to place the eyebrows.

Remember the "R(S)W UV Map Skin" that you wore on your avatar above? Now is a good time to use it to find out where to put those eyebrows :)

Go to the bottom of the Layers palette.

Click on the "Create a new layer" button. Change the name of the new layer to "Eyebrow L".

Use the Brush Tool (or whatever Photoshop tools you prefer) to draw in the left eyebrow. You can even cut and paste an eyebrow from another picture.

For this example, I used the Pen Tool to create a Path (so I can tweak it as needed). I filled in the Path with a darker color. Then I used Filter/Noise/Add Noise to add some noise to the eyebrow.

Note that as you make some of these changes, you may want to upload them to SL to check it on your avatar. This is the only way to tell what it will actually look like.

Once you are happy with the left eyebrow, we will copy it to the right side.

Go to the Layers palette. Right-click on the "Eyebrow L" layer. Select "Duplicate Layer..." from the popup menu. Change the name of the new layer to "Eyebrow R".

Make sure that the "Eyebrow R" layer is selected.

Click on "Edit" from the top menu bar. Select "Transform", and "Flip Horizontal". This will flip the eyebrow to the correct orientation.

Click on the "Move Tool" and move the eyebrow into position.

Now we have a set of nice eyebrows :)

Eyelashes

Eyelashes are probably the most complicated part about making skin texture. Thats because eyelashes need to have a transparent background.

We want black eyelashes. So we will change the color of the eyelashes, and build an Alpha Channel.

Go to the Layers palette. Select the "Eyebrows & Eyelashes" layer near the top. (Note that you will not see the eyebrows you just drew, because they are on separate layers.)

Change the Blend Mode from "Multiply" to "Normal". You should now see the eyelashes against a white background on the upper right corner.

Click on the "Image" option from the top menu bar. Select "Adjustments" and "Desaturate". This will turn the eyelashes grey.

Click on the "Image" option from the top menu bar again. Select "Adjustments" and "Brightness/Contrast..."

At the "Brightness/Contrast" window, change the Contrast setting to +50.

The eyelashes should now be black :)

Next, we need to build the Alpha Channel...

Click on the "Magic Wand Tool". Make sure that the "New selection" square is selected on the upper left corner of the screen. Set the Tolerance to 50. Make sure that "Contiguous" is checked.

Then click in the white area between the eyelash and the black line border.

Click on the "Edit" option from the top menu bar. Select "Clear". This will make the white area transparent (and show the blue layer beneath).

Go to the Layers palette. Right-click in the little picture on the "Eyebrows & Eyelashes" layer (make sure its in the picture!). Select the "Select Layer Transparency" option from the popup menu.

Go to the Channels palette. Click on the "Save selection as channel" button at the bottom of the Channels palette. This will create the "Alpha 1" channel.

Go to the Layers palette. Make sure that the "Eyebrows & Eyelashes" layer is selected. Change the Blend Mode from "Normal" back to "Multiply".

And heres what our skin looks like so far :)

Finishing Touches

We are going to put on a few more finishing touches. In particular, we are going to add some color to the lips, to the eye area, and some dirt.

Use your favorite Tool to draw in the lips.

I used the Pen Tool to draw a Path around the lip area (so I can tweak it as needed). Refer to the "R(S)W UV Map Skin" to see how the texture fits on the avatar.

I filled the Path with a pink color. Then I stroked the Path with a darker pink color (hey, even a corpse can use a lip liner :D) I blended the lip liner into the lips using a low Strength Smudge Tool.

For the eye area, I used different tones for the shadow around the eye area, and an accent shadow for the eyelids.

I used the Gradient Tool set to Radial Gradient to create the main eye shadow. The Gradient is set to go from opaque to transparent. I pushed outward in small strokes around the eye to create the effect of color radiating outward.

I made the accent shadow on the eyelids using the Pen Tool to create a Path. I filled the Path with the accent color, and stroked it with a darker color to create a liner effect.

Finally, I used the Smudge Tool to blend the colors together.

Once the first eye is done, you can copy the layer, flip it, and move it to the other eye (just like the eyebrows).

And I added just a touch of grey for the nostrils...

Lastly, Emily has some discoloration on her forehead, and a scar/hole on her left cheek.

I drew these in using one of the standard Photoshop "Spatter" Brushes.

Thats it...our texture is finally done! Yay!!!

Prepare for Upload

We have to perform couple tasks before we can upload the texture...

First, we need to turn off the "UVs" layer.

Go to the Layers palette. Find the "UVs" layer. Click on the "eye" on the left side to hide the layer.

We have been working with a 1024x1024 texture. This is great for detail work. Unfortunately, we need to save this texture as a Targa file. And 1024x1024 Targa files are HUGE: they are 4 times larger than a 512x512 file!

So we are going to reduce the resolution to 512x512.

Click on the "Image" option from the top menu bar. Select the "Image Size..." option. Enter "512" for Width and Height.

Because we have an Alpha channel, we need to save the texture as a Targa (.TGA) file.

Click on the "File" option from the top menu bar. Select "Save As...".

At the "Save As" window, change the "Format:" to "Targa (*.TGA,*.VDA,*.ICB,*.VST)".

At the "Targa Options" window, be sure you choose "32 bits/pixel" for Resolution and "Compress (RLE)" is unchecked.

See what a little lip color and eye shadow does for a corpse? :P

Creating a skin is about putting these little details onto the texture files. You can spend as little or as much time as you like. But a really good skin can take days or even weeks to create!

Good luck, and have fun making your own Avatar Skins! :)

Guess what "[Ctrl]-[Shift]-H" stands for?

Hop-scotch! :)

Bye!!!

Day 375: Octoberville

This year, I wanted to check out Halloween places before November 1st :)

Theres always the spooky Devil's Labyrinth all year around (and always growing!). And October Country, where it will always be Halloween :)

But if you like scavenger hunts and haunted mansions, you only have until Halloween to join in the 3rd annual Octoberville scavenger hunt!

You start out by picking up your private investigator notebook from your office.

Thats me: Detective Natalia Zelmanov, private eye! :P

Then you just wander around the town of Octoberville to collect clues and find all 100 items. Thats right: 100! :)

But dont worry, they are everywhere and easy to find. Unfortunately, theres a LOT of them!

And in case you get discouraged, theres already a bunch of people who have found all 100!

Theres a Top 20 scoreboard that keeps track of the top scavengers. You still have a chance to make it on the board :)

Your notebook keeps track of all the items and will cross them out as you find them. Check out all the stuff I found! :)

You notebook is a HUD attachment, so be sure you "Wear" it. If you are not looking at the notebook, just click the "down arrow" button on the upper right corner to minimize it. Remember, you have to be "Wearing" your notebook to collect items!

Once in a while, you should "Detach" the notebook and "Wear" it again. This will "save" your notebook in case your SL program or the sim crashes! (Oh...that never happens, does it? ;P)

The town of Octoberville is a fun place to explore, with lots of stuff to do!

You can ride a train on a haunted tour of the sim...

And go through all the buildings in town...

Help! Fire!

I didnt touch anything...that box was sitting there and suddenly burst into flames...honest!

OMG! OMG! Spiders!

Get these spiders off me!!!

Say, wasnt he in last year's Octoberville? I guess he didnt make it out of this maze!

What Halloween sim is complete without a haunted house? :P

And Octoberville certainly has a big house!

Umm...those spikes are Phantom Prims, right?

Ever get the feeling someone is watching you?

HELP!!!

A mouse! A giant hairy mouse with a tail!

Well, at least I got this cool compact and mirror (along with a whole bunch of gadgets!).

Because its really popular, Octoberville can be a bit laggy during the day. You may have to "Touch" an object a few times before the notebook recognizes it. It can be a bit frustrating, but you may want to try during off-hours... As long as you keep your notebook, you can always come back later.

Whether you want to join in the scavenger hunt or not, come check out Octoberville between now and Halloween. I dont know how much longer it will be there after Halloween, so better hurry :)

Click on Search, select Places, and enter "octoberville" as the keyword. The SLURL is PixelTrix (159,105,22).

Oh Mr. Troll, you wouldnt want to eat a mermaid! I mean we are full of fish bones and scales...really, its very bad for you!

Day 373: October Country

***Update: Unfortunately, October Country is no more :( (Darn...I liked those ghost stories, too!)

***New Update: According to Emily's comment in the Graveyard: October Country is gone --- but a remnant of it's spirit lives on as the October Undead -- group and radio feed with member campsites and events scattered around the grid that keep the spirit alive.

It was a dark and stormy night...

Apparently in the 1940s and 50s, scary radio shows were really popular. Full of drama and spooky sound effects...

You can now come listen to these radio shows in a haunted cemetary, along with a few of your fellow residents :)

So set your Force Sun to Midnight, and come to October Country!

Its always autumn in October Country. In fact, the description says its always Halloween here :)

The radio show is called The Haunting Hour. It starts at about 11am SL and runs all day and night...

And you can listen to the show while you explore the sim.

Theres a creepy cemetary, full of those robed guys who make them creepy :P

Theres a village with a well...

Whats that? Is there something at the bottom of the well?

Its so creepy here, I wouldnt even go in the water!

And they are building a mystery hotel...

Who knows what foul tales will unfold there...

Its October, so come check out October Country! :) Click on Search, select Places, and enter "haunting" as the keyword. The SLURL is October Country (142,79,24).

Hey, Mr. Creepy Robed Guy! Why do you keep walking in circles behind me?

Are you hitting on me? :P

Day 372: Sirena 2 Women/1 Men's Hairstyles (Autumn Hairstyles)

Its October! That means its time to get ready for Autumn. And big long hairs are definitely the fashion this season :)

Phoebe is a styled cut that frames the face in front. The sides and back are completely flexi, and sways naturally about your face :) Comes with a color-change glittery jeweled hair pin...

Ryan is a short curly hair made specially for guys. The hair has tons of short curls to give it that natural messy look :)

The new season of my favorite mermaid TV show (H2O Just Add Water) just started :) Im so excited, I can hardly pull my fin away from the TV :P

Its an Australian TV show. So Im totally jealous if you live in Australia! ;P
