Day 370: Battlestar Pacifica

Are you a fan of the Battlestar Galactica series? Well, Battlestar Pacifica in the BSG47 sim is dedicated to Battlestar Galactica role-playing :)

Battlestar Pacifica is an immersive RP sim. So even visitors must participate in the role-playing.

According to the sim rules, only humans are allowed (unless you are one of the robots...and I dont mean Transformers or droids :P). And you should wear contemporary clothes when visiting: that means no Victorian bustle gowns. (Mermaids are OK...cause they'll never know ;P)

If you choose to participate in the sim, there are many military and civilian roles (from administrator to shuttle pilot). So you dont have to participate in any fighting (unless you want to).

I havent actually seen the show, but I have a good idea from browsing the Internet :) Anyway, it really looks like a cool role-playing sim, so I decided to go sneak around :P

The BSG47 sim is made up of a number of spaceships.

The main arrival point is the civilian ship 7th Heaven...

7th Heaven looks like a luxury ship. It has really nice hotel-style rooms and even a piano lounge :)

Wheres Caterin when you need her? ;P

The main ship is the Battlestar Pacifica...

A visitor pass? But its blue...it totally doesnt go with my outfit!

You wouldnt have a pink visitor pass, would you?

Pacifica is this giant military ship with metal everything...

And heres one of those ships that pilots get to fly around in...

Pacifica has this big impressive bridge with lots of...stuff :P

Why do they call it a bridge anyway? Theres not like any water under it...

They even have this big bowling alley at the bottom of the ship with lots of lanes :)

Ooo...pretty purple ball!

Theres a couple other ships too...like the Celestra.

Id give the Celestra 3 stars...somewhere between the 7th Heaven and Pacifica. The rooms are definitely nicer than the Pacific, but not up to the 7th Heaven's standards ;P

And then, theres this weird Gothy ship...

Personally, I love the whole modernist decor: stylish yet pragmatic ;P

The BSG47 sim has its own newspaper and even website.

If you enjoy science fiction role-playing, come check out the BSG47 sim! Click on the Map button at the bottom of your screen, enter "bsg47" as the keyword, and click on the Search button. The SLURL is BSG47 (128,128,0).

So where do I get the bowling balls?

Day 368: A Dream of Clock Island

***Update: Unfortunately, Clock Island is no longer there :(

I had a strange dream: I was in a place of numbers, of time, and clocks...

I gazed into the telescope at the giant hourglass reaching into the clouds...

A display invited my touch, and spoke in Japanese...

It told of clues to gather...

...from glowing numbers hidden across the island...

Another display spoke of the Japanese website crazy-genius.com, where clues and challenges await...

There was a place where white pointers fell from the sky and piled high on the ground...

The pointers gave me a pointer in turn...how very odd indeed!

There was an elevator that took me to the top of the hourglass...

I fell into the hourglass...

Numbers rained down all around me...

I reached bottom to find a land of numbers...

The denizens gave me a white gown of numbers and bade me farewell...

What does all this mean?

In the end, a mermaid's thoughts return to the sea...

To visit Clock Island, click on the Map button on the bottom of your screen, and enter "clock island" in the search box, and click the "Search" button. The SLURL is Clock Island (128,128,0).

Why dont I have dreams about Brad Pitt instead? :P

Day 366: Avaria & Grendel’s Children

Welcome to Avaria, an incredibly detailed fantasy sim, and also home to the Grendel's Children store.

Grendel's Children sells fantasy avatars, most at amazingly low prices. Everything from dragons to birds to really weird monsters.

They also have Deep Sea Siren mermaid avatars. Second cousins, many times removed. Always causing trouble at family gatherings ;P

One of the coolest things to do at Avaria is to hatch your own Draklet Egg :)

Just buy one of these egg carriers for L$30. You need to explore the sim and find a spot where the Draklet will hatch. They are kinda picky ;P

But you get this *CUTE* little baby dragon :)

Blue Poseball darling, I have great news! Im going to be a Mommy :)

Blue? Are you OK? Did you just turned pale or is it the light?

Avaria is HUGE, with 4 connected sims!

The Grendel's Children store and a number of buildings are in the air. When you arrive, you get a Notecard with a Flight Feather. You should consider Wearing the Flight Feather, in case you have problems crossing sims (and end up falling to the ground below!)

There are beautiful gardens in the sky...

Or stop by the library, where you can check out all the different species of Draklets (that can hatch from the egg) and read the history of Avaria.

You can choose to just explore, or engage in light free-form role-playing. But just remember, not everyone is role-playing here :)

Umm...Im so sorry to bother you...would you know where the ladies room is?

And you absolutely must see the ground level! Its easy to get to...just fall off something :)

It has a desert and lush oasis...

And many underground tunnels with beautiful waterfalls and caverns!

To come see Avaria and Grendel's Children, click on Search, select Places, and enter "grendel's". The SLURL is Avaria Tor (128,128,0).

OMG, I hatched a blue baby dragon! :)

Blue Poseball is going to be so happy...I think...

I am so totally going to dress you up in cute little baby dragon outfits, and buy you the best baby dragon food :)

Umm...what exactly does baby dragons eat?

Its my Rezday! Its my Rezday!

Thank you for being a part of my wonderful Second Life this past 365 days :) This has certainly been an interesting year!

I hope you had as much fun as I did. And I hope we will all be here together on Day 730 :)

Time of hair announcements!

With all thats going on, I only managed to make 2 hairs this week. Ive been taking more time with making hairs, so I hope you enjoy them! :)

Brenda is a pulled back style with flair: lots of flexi strands fan out in all directions from the back. So what goes with this dramatic hair? How about a pair of black hair sticks with color-changing gems :)

Shelly is a long, curly hair that runs down your shoulders and back. Comes with a super real color-changing sculptie Hair Flower...because what else goes with big curly hair? :)

These Sirena hairstyles include built-in Face Lighting so you always look your best. Just try on a demo and see the difference!

All hairstyles come in 3 sizes, (S)mall, (M)edium, and (L)arge for easy fitting and adjustment.

There are 48 textures in 12 color packs to choose from. And all hairs can be color-tinted (with 66 colors) to give you even more color choices!

Check them out online at www.SirenaHair.com or at Sirena Hair & Fashion. Click on Search, select Places, and enter "sirena" as the keyword.

Aww...Blue, a surprise birthday party! You are so sweet :)

Um...I wish for...World Peace :)

Day 363: Creating Goth Avatar Skin Part 1

Have you seen my husband... Victor?

Heehee...my all time favorite movie is the Corpse Bride. So what better way to start the series on Avatar Skins than to make Emily, the Corpse Bride :)

I get requests for a skin tutorial almost every week. Ive been avoiding it, cause its really not something Im good at. But Ill give it a try here just for fun :)

In this Part 1 of the Avatar Skin series, we will work on a Goth-type skin (specifically, the Corpse Bride :D). My goal is to describe all the general steps involved in creating an Avatar Skin. We will create a base set of skin textures and apply it to our avatar.

I chose a Goth-type skin to start because I want to focus on the process of creating Avatar Skin, not on all the texture work. A Goth-type skin is usually less complex than a realistic-looking "normal" skin. If I dont pull out all my prim hair, I will try to do "normal" skins in the future :)

Because there is a lot of texture work involved, I cannot provide step-by-step instructions. Instead, I will describe the texture work as best as I can. At the end of this tutorial, you may not have a usable Avatar Skin. However you should get a better understand of all the steps involved in creating one.

Creating Avatar Skins is a challenging and time-consuming process. And since the best way to view a texture is to upload it, you will probably spend a couple hundred L$ in uploads to make your first skin. Think of it as the cost of a cup of coffee :P

This tutorial assumes that you are very familiar with Photoshop (or another paint program). Also, you should be familiar with creating clothing for Second Life (including how to create Alpha channels). Trust me, the first thing you create in SL should not be an Avatar Skin! ;P

***Update: I received a comment from Misae pointing to a wonderful resource: Eloh Eliot has free skin files in PSD format for people to use as a learning tool. The only stipulation is that anything created with these files be also free. Here are a couple links to the files: Vint Falken's blog and Eloh's files.

Overview

Second Life Avatar Skins consists of 3 texture file: Head, Upper Body, and Lower Body. Theres a matching texture template file for each of these textures.

You are probably familiary with the Upper Body and Lower Body templates. The Upper Body template is the same one used to make tops and shirts. The Lower Body template is the same one used to make pants and socks.

These 3 texture files are placed in the Tattoo layer of an avatar. If you open the Appearance window, the Tattoo layer is in the "Skin" tab.

Creating Avatar Skin uses exactly the same process as creating clothing. It just happens to be a piece of clothing that completely covers your avatar from head to toe. But the process is the same: you create a texture in a paint program, create Alpha channels as needed, upload the texture, then apply it to your avatar.

The big difference is the time it takes to create the texture. The professional SL skin designers often take weeks, even months, to develop a complete line of skins. So you can spend as little or as much time as you like in developing Avatar Skins.

Getting the Texture Templates

You probably have texture templates that you use for making clothes or other designs. For the purposes of this tutorial, you will need the SL Avatar UV templates from Robin Wood. Robin Wood's Head template has a shading layer that saves a lot of time for creating simple Avatar Skins.

You can download the templates from here. For this tutorial, you will need the "layered Photoshop (.psd) Files". You should download the "All (7.6 MB)" file, which contains all 3 texture templates.

Once you have downloaded the "Layered-UVs-PSD.zip" file, go ahead and uncompress the file.

Preparing the Avatar

Ideally, we would create one set of textures in Photoshop, upload the textures, apply it to the avatar, and thats it.

Realistically, we will be tweaking the textures many times, uploading after some major changes, apply it to the avatar so we can see how it looks, and go back to tweaking. Creating a decent Avatar Skin is a repetitive process, each time adding more things until you achieve the desired look.

So before we can start working on making textures, we need to prepare our avatar to use our new textures.

Open your Inventory window. Click on the "Create" option from the top menu bar. Select "New Body Parts >" and "New Skin".

This will create a "New Skin" object under your "Body Parts" folder.

Right-click on the "New Skin" object, select "Rename", and change the Name to "Tutorial Skin".

Right-click on "Tutorial Skin" and select "Wear".

And heres our inner newbie...Pretty scary, isnt it? :P

Right-click on your avatar and select "Appearance..."

At the Appearance window, select the "Skin" tab.

Notice the Head Tattoo, Upper Tattoo, and Lower Tattoo texture boxes are empty. We will be creating textures for each of these boxes.

In my case, I have created a special shape and a set of eyes for Emily. Depending on the Avatar Skin you are making, you can just use your "normal" shape and eyes.

I also have a prim hair (a modified LeAnn with a custom texture). Hey, I gotta have hair ;P

If you have a specific shape or eyes you would like to use, you should "Wear" them now so you have a more realistic view of the skin.

Creating the Base Head Texture

Because there are 3 templates involved, I prefer to create a quick set of base textures. We can then upload these and apply them immediately to the avatar. Then, we can go back, do the detail work on the textures, and have a decent avatar to preview with.

Lets start with the Head. Open the "SL Avatar Head Layers.psd" file in Photoshop (or your preferred paint program).

Select "File/Save As..." and save it as "Tutorial Head.psd".

Go to the "Layers" palette. Click on the "eye" next to ALL layers to hide them. Then click on the "eye" next to the "Eyebrows & Eyelashes" and "Shading" layers to show just those 2 layers.

Go to the bottom of the "Layers" palette. Click on the "Create a new layer" button on the bottom of the "Layers" palette to create a new "Layer 1" layer.

Move "Layer 1" to the bottom, below the "mouth" layer.

Click on the "eye" next to the "mouth" layer to make it visible.

Change the foreground color square and pick a base color for your skin. If its a Goth skin, you might want to choose a very light beige. In Emily's case, shes more cyan :) If its a "normal" skin, then pick a desired skin-tone.

Hint: You can use the "eyedrop" tool to sample colors from a picture. This helps a great deal in picking base colors.

Click on "Paint Bucket" button. Make sure that the new "Layer 1" is selected. Click on the drawing to fill the drawing with the base color.

Notice the drawing already has shading for major facial features (from the "Shading" layer). This gives our skin instant definition without having to draw it in by hand! (thanks Robin, you are awesome :D)

Thats it! We are read to save and export the Head template.

Click "File/Save" to save your changes.

Click "File/Save for Web...".

At the "Save For Web" window, change the Preset to "JPEG High". Click the "Save" button.

Note that the drawing is at 1024x1024 resolution. You normally want to use this level of resolution while working on the skin. But for final output, you may want to reduce the resolution to 512x512 so it would load faster.

Also, using "Save For Web" reduces the quality of the color but creates much smaller files. If exact color is very important, you should use "File/Save As..." and select "JPEG" instead.

Creating the Base Upper Body Texture

Next is the Upper Body template. The Upper Body (and Lower Body) templates are a lot easier than the Head. We just want to fill it with a color that matches the Head.

However, the Head template uses a combination of 2 colors: the base color you chose, and the shading. The shading at the neck seam is a grey color (Red = 90, Green = 90, Blue = 90). So we need to create 2 layers and put these 2 colors onto those layers.

Open the "SL Avatar Top Layers.psd" file.

Select "File/Save As..." and save it as "Tutorial Upper.psd".

Go to the "Layers" palette. Click on the "eye" next to ALL layers to hide them.

Go to the very bottom of the "Layers" palette. Click twice on the "Create a new layer" button on the bottom of the palette to create 2 new layers.

Click and drag both of these 2 new layers to the bottom of the "Layers" palette.

Make sure that the bottom-most layer is active ("Layer 1" in this example).

Click on the foreground color square. Select the same base color you used in the Head template.

Click on "Paint Bucket" button. Click on the drawing to fill the drawing with the base color.

Select the layer just above the bottom-most layer ("Layer 2" in this case).

Click on the foreground color square. Enter the color values for a grey: Red = 90, Green = 90, Blue = 90.

Make sure the layer above the bottom-most layer is active ("Layer 2" in this example).

Click on the "Paint Bucket" button. Click on the drawing to fill the drawing with the grey color.

Make sure the layer above the bottom-most layer is active ("Layer 2" in this example).

Change the Opacity to 30%.

Thats it for the Upper Body template!

Click "File/Save" to save your changes.

Click "File/Save for Web...".

At the "Save For Web" window, change the Preset to "JPEG High". Click the "Save" button.

Creating the Base Lower Body Texture

The last one is the Lower Body template. We need to do the exact same thing as the Upper Body template: turn all the layers off, create 2 new layers, fill 1 with the base color, and fill the other with the shading color.

Open the "SL Avatar Bottom Layers.psd" file.

Select "File/Save As..." and save it as "Tutorial Lower.psd".

Go ahead and repeat the steps in the "Creating the Base Upper Body Texture" section above.

Applying the Base Textures

Now that we have the 3 texture files, its time to upload them and try it on our avatar :) Note that this step will cost L$30 (L$20 if you just use the same texture for Upper and Lower Body).

Go ahead and upload the 3 textures files: "Tutorial-Head.jpg", "Tutorial-Upper.jpg", and "Tutorial-Lower.jpg".

Right-click on your avatar and select "Appearance...".

At the Appearance window, select the "Skin" tab. Click on each of the 3 Tattoo textures and select the corresponding texture you just uploaded.

Tada! You just made you first complete set of Avatar Skins :)

You may notice a slight gap between the Head texture and the Upper Body texture at the neck. We will fix that in Part 2.

Now we are all set to start tweaking those texture files...

Victor darling, WHERE ARE YOU?

Day 361: Sector 7

***Update: Sector 7 is no longer there... Looks like no more transformer mermaid :P

Hello from a foggy Sector 7 :) Sector 7 was built to promote the Transformers movie that came out a couple months ago.

I havent seen the movie yet, but I know its about giant robots that turn into cars and stuff (I have brothers :P).

Really, is all this security necessary?

Maybe I shouldve gone to that garden sim instead :P

Hey, stop that! It tickles!

Sector 7 is this giant dam with some really nice details. I love that reflection thing on the floor :)

There are robot AV's walking around this spooky place!

And theres this really mean-looking giant robot!

Theres a lab and meeting area next to the giant robot...

Hey, is that a diamond in there? :)

Behind a set of windows, theres a really really huge, sinister-looking area you are not allowed to enter.

Im sure this will all make sense if I watched the movie ;P

Oh...oh...and the best part is the beautiful robot AV's they are giving away for free! There are also free T-shirts and stuff all over the place :)

Check out the Silverscreens blog entries about the Transformers contest, finalists, and the winner. Pretty amazing!

Sector 7 is also the meeting place for robot enthusiasts, as well as the home of the Sector 7 group.

If you like Transformers or robots, definitely check out Sector 7. Click on Search, select Places, and enter "sector 7" as the keyword. The SLURL is Sector 7 (146,61,163).

Transformer mermaid!

Does this thingie make me look fat? :P

Day 359: Aiot's Toon Wonderland

As Autumn approaches, its time to go somewhere colorful. So whats more colorful than a cartoon sim? :P

Welcome to Aiot's Toon Wonderland. According to the notecard, its a sim "dedicated to all things video game, cartoon, or animation related."

Heehee yep...it certainly looks like you are in a cartoon :)

On the ground level, there are several different areas, like Marioland. You can walk around just like you would in the video game :)

Then theres camping. Not the kind you do in a club :P

You know, the kind where you put up a tent and watch a weird yellow creature roast marshmallows.

Then there are these creepy cute little black bugs that pop up all over the place. If you Touch them a bunch of times, they explode! *Ick*

Really...thats just asking for it! :P

BTW, its kinda tough to jump on the "structure". So try sitting on it then getting up. It has the same effect :) Aaaaahhhhh!!!

(and keep doing it if you see another one :P)

If you get bored with the ground level, theres the Teleporter :) Its near the arrival area. It takes you to some interesting destinations...

Like a swamp...

Hey, you cant eat me! Im a mermaid!

Help!!!

Or your own island in the sky with a giant treehouse...

Unfortunately, theres no easy way to get back from some of these places. So its easier just to go back to the main arrival area.

Theres even a shop here that sells cartoon avatars :)

Aiot's is definitely a goofy place to explore and hang out if you are feeling cartoony :) I shouldve worn my Jessica Rabbit outfit ;P

To come see Aiot's, click on Search, select Places, and enter "toon" as the keyword. The SLURL is Novgorod (165,144,105).

Ever get the feeling you're being watched?

Day 358: Vote Against Hunger & 3 NEW Women's Hairstyles

***Update: The 12Avatar Contest received many complaints about the Vote Against Hunger campaign, specifically about the L$10 donation per vote and the Free Hair. As a result, I am voluntarily withdrawing from the 12Avatar Contest.

As an acknowledgement of those who have voted, I am donating the full amount of the Matching Pledge (L$20,000) to Action Against Hunger in your honor. Thank you for taking the time to vote for this campaign. In the end, there were more than 130 residents who took the time to care!

Because of group notices and announcements, I know some residents are planning to come to the Sirena store to get the Free Hair and voting information. So I am leaving the Free Hair at the arrival area of the Sirena store. It will remain there as a Free Hair until Sunday, 9/23. So you dont have to feel bad now about not voting ;P

I apologize for causing the problems with the 12Avatar Contest. I was trying to do some good, and did not mean to cause any trouble or bad feelings. Thats why I believe withdrawing from the Contest is the best thing to do at this point.

I believe in and have supported Action Against Hunger for many years. If any good comes of this, I hope you will consider them for your charity giving. You can donate even small amounts to them directly at the Action Against Hunger website.

Its Monday, time for hair releases!

Steve was sick last week, so I couldnt make any hair for guys ;P

Instead, I made 3 long, lovely women's hairstyles, packed with naturally moving flexis :)

Ashley pulls back to a dramatic, sensuous tail ending in a flow of flexis. Ashley comes with a detachable color-change ribbon thats woven into the hair. The ribbon ties to a bow on the right side and streams carelessly in the wind :)

Destiny is a free flowing hair that starts short in the front and gradually becomes long in the back. Destiny moves naturally with completely flexi sides and back. Comes with a Jeweled Hair Pin to add a touch of highlight :)

Farrah is a romantic, styled cut with a dramatic front and long flowing back. Comes with tiny hair gems for just a little more accent :)

Steve, Steve, you dont look very well! Maybe you should see a doctor!

Day 356: Post 6 Grrrl and Getting Started Guide Update #3

The Second Life Herald has an infamous, long-running feature called Post 6 Grrrl that dates back to December 2004.

When Justine Babii was kind enough to ask me to become a Post 6 Grrrl, I didnt know what to say: the traditional post has 1 shot with clothing and 2 without clothing. And I like traditions...sorta :) Heres the link to the Post 6 Grrrl post...

And here is the third and final set of rewrites for the "Getting Started in Second Life Guide". This week, its Inventory, Clothing, and Objects Guide. The skills a new resident needs to get stuff from vendors, out of boxes, and manage Inventory.

The "Getting Started in Second Life Guide" now has complete info for a new resident to go from Orientation Island to the dance club :P Most of the important gaps have been filled in (things like saving appearance, opening boxes, camera controls, finding events, etc). Hopefully, the Guide proves useful for new residents!

Thursday, September 13, 2007

Day 354: Kowloon

Since I have this cute Gothic Lolita outfit on, I wanted to visit some place in Asia. Hmm...Ive never been to Hong Kong or China, so how about Kowloon?

Hey look, they even have a gift for visitors :)

Umm, on second thought...I dont think so!!! :P

(Heehee check out the SL program in Japanese :D)

Kowloon has the coolest signs! Theres even a shop that sells the textures.

BTW, when you first arrive, you get a Notecard to change your SL settings. Kowloon looks *much* better if you follow them :)

The Jetgraphics Cafe has a bunch of tasks you can do while you are here. For example, theres a scavanger hunt for 10 shrimps...

Um...this place is like seriously icky! Eeeww! Im not touching anything!!!

Oooo...pretty temple :)

Heehee super high-tech teleporting fire hydrants :P

I found a shrimp! I found a shrimp! :)

They even have these cool panda bear rides...for Normals and Tinies :)

Heehee heres my Elegant Gothic shot :P

According to the Notecard, the Kowloon sim is based on the Playstation game "Kowloon's Gate". Its designed by a Japanese team from Jetgraphics.

The Kowloon sim is an amazingly detailed sim with wonderfully icky textures :P There are lots of interesting places and hidden surprises.

As far as I can tell, Kowloon is a residential sim (you can rent apartment and stores here, although the rental Website is in Japanese ;P). Theres perhaps some light role-playing among the residents. Visitors are definitely welcome!

Help...Im totally lost in this maze! Come rescue me from Kowloon!

If you would like to join the search in Kowloon for the lost Gothic Lolita, click on Search, select Places, and enter "kowloon" as the keyword. The SLURL is Kowloon (139,41,24).

Ooo...a L$1 fortune telling machine :)

What do you mean, "今日のあなたは「ガスコンロの妄人」です。"?

Lets see...Google Translator says, "Present you are 'the 妄 person of the gas cookstove'."

Hey...Im not a cookstove! I want my L$1 back!!! :(

Day 352: September 11th Memorial

Today being September 11th, it seems appropriate to take a moment to remember the victim of the tragedy 6 years ago. Sim owner Winfried Ferraris and designer Liam Kanno lovingly created a touching Memorial...

The Memorial is a nearly sim-wide square of black marble, bearing the names of the 2,996 people who lost that day, and surrounds a large pool in the center.

With a wall of photos making up the inner wall...

Wreaths, flowers, candles, and other tokens lined the Memorial...

Be sure to click on the mailbox near the arrival area for a Notecard and a white rose you can place at the Memorial.

The September 11th Memorial is expected to be a permanent part of Second Life. Consider leaving a donation to help support the costs of operating the Memorial sim.

To visit the Memorial, click on Search, select Places, and enter "september" as the keyword. The SLURL is World Trade Center (175,79,26).

Day 351: Sirena 2 Women/1 Men's Hairstyles (Alternative Hairstyles)

Boo!

Heehee Im feeling silly today :P Its Monday again. Time for hair releases :)

With Fall and Halloween coming, its time to make some alternative hairstyles. Besides, I keep finding all these Goth/Punk magazine articles all over the workshop. Cant imagine how they got there...

Lolita is the classic Gothic Lolita hair, straight from that famous bridge in Harajuku, Tokyo. In light or dark colors, it brings out your ultra-cute inner doll :) Its a fashion trend thats so cool, its even banned in SL (OK, at least the word "lolita" is ;P).

Lolita comes with a detachable sculptie headband thats so real, you have to see it! Its color-changeable, from pink to dark pale blue, depending on the doll's mood :)

Rain showers you in long, stranded flexis that sway naturally as you move about. Comes with accenting hair extensions that adds 2 tones to your hair: a black base, and a color-changing blonde.

Dante, the poet-philosopher, likes his hair free and on the long side. Its a man's hair thats completely flexi on all sides, and moves like real hair should!

Steve, what are you doing in a Gothic Lolita castle?

Hey! Stop playing with my hair accessories!!!

Day 349: Getting Started Guide Update #2

Here is the second installment of rewrites for the "Getting Started in Second Life Guide". This week, its Teleport, Finding Places, and Landmark Guide. All the info a new resident needs to know to TP around SL and find those cool clubs ;P

I also added a Graveyard section to this blog as a memorial to the sims Ive visited, but are no longer in SL. I hope our favorite sims dont end up there :)

I have 1 more update to do next week to the Getting Started Guide. If you are an experienced SL designer/builder, we will be getting back to super twisted flexi sculpties with particle effects shortly after that :P

Day 347: Wonders #6: Search for Machu Picchu (or Hunt for Macho Peacock)

Continuing my journey to visit all New 7 Wonders of the World (or their equivalents) in Second Life, today Im searching for the famous Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu.

Despite my best efforts, I couldnt find Machu Picchu in Second Life. And the only signs of the lost Incan civilization in SL appears to be a jewelry store :P

So the closest thing in SL to Machu Picchu would probably be its cousins, the Mayan ruins at Lauk's Nest and Chichen Itza; and the Aztec pyramids at The Rainforest.

So what do I do for the rest of this blog entry? Im going on a hunt for that elusive Macho Peacock! :P

First, its the "Peacock with Touch Sound" (lets call him "Mr. Touch"). He comes from North Beach & Maracas Tropicals (you have to follow the Red arrow from the TP point). Mr. Touch has a primmy tail and a cute round face. And yes, he makes a noise if you touch him :)

Next up, its "Peacock Splendor" (lets call him "Mr. Splendor"). He comes from Lily's Garden. Mr. Splendor has a simplier texture tail, but he like to walk in circles and also makes noise!

Our next contestant is "Shengri La Peacock" (lets call him "Mr. Shengri La"). He comes from Shengri La Scripted Animals (part of the Prim & Proper's store). Mr. Shengri La likes to wander around the garden in his own very realistic way. He also opens and closes his tail...but only if he likes you :)

Our final contestant is "Julia's Peacock" from Creative Fantasy Home & Gardens (let's call him "Mr. Creative"). Mr. Creative also makes noise and has the prettiest overall texture :)

So who does all the peahens dream about at night? Who is the Macho Peacock? Is it Mr. Touch, Mr. Splendor, Mr. Shengri La, or Mr. Creative?

What do you think?

Dont be jealous, Blue Poseball darling! I wasnt trying to pick up the peacocks. Honest!

Day 345: Galveston Island, Texas

Its always facinating for me to see a Real Life place reproduced in Second Life. So when I heard about the Galveston Island sims in SL, I had to go check it out :)

The Galveston Island sims are sponsored by the The Galveston Island Convention & Visitors Bureau to promote the Real Life Galveston Island in Texas. The RL Galveston is a tourist attraction known for its historical neighnorhoods, beaches, and attractions.

The designers even won an award for the design of these sims!

If you click on these green binoculars in Galveston, they will take to some webcams with live pix of the RL Galveston. Totally spooky :P

Take a trolley through the length of the 2 sims, including the downtown shopping area.

(Lol, this is so weird referring to the RL website ;P)

At the Walking Tour of Historical Galveston, they even have one of those display areas with info on how the town got started, etc. Its so spooky, cause it feels just like the ones in RL...or is it the other way around?

Theres a piece of the Moody Gardens here. Just like the RL one, they have these giant pyramids with displays inside. The Aquarium Pyramid (my fav, of course :D) is 12 stories high with 1.5 million gallons of water! Thats a lot of prims! :P

Oh...oh...and they have an amusement area with TONS of rides! And you know how much I love rides :)

Aaaaahhhh!!!!

The Seawolf Park at Galveston Island has also become a popular live music destination in Second Life. There were at least 2 live concert events today that threatened to pack the sim!

Just one minor complaint: the event schedules in the sim are outdated, making it hard to find out about Galveston-based events. I hope they get a chance to update them soon!

If you enjoy live music, or want to see how real a virtual resort town can look, come check out Galveston Island. Click on Search, select Places, and enter "galveston" as the keyword. Pick any of the TP destinations for the Galveston sims. The SLURL is
Galveston Isle (197,164,27).

Day 344: Sirena 2 Women/1 Men's Hairstyles (Last Days of Summer)

The end is near...The end is near! The end of summer (vacation) that is! Its the last chance to get in some summer parties :)

So Ive made a few hairstyles just for these last-minute parties!

Rave can be a chic day hair, or the ultimate party girl (the rave kinda party that is... :D). Its full of flexis that poof out in every direction, and bounces as you move to the beat. Perfect for those crazy rave colors :)

And the best part is the raver dreadlock accessory. Its partially color-changing, so you can pick just the right colors to match your outfit. But youre not suppose to match stuff on a rave outfit, right? ;P

Beyonce is a beautiful long curly style, not named after anyone in particular ;P Its the glamorous red-carpet look, perfect for the ballroom or just being admired :)

Comes with a color-change hair flower that adds the perfect accent...

Spike is a mohawk, done in true Second Life fashion: the top is flexi :) Spike is a unisex hair, and comes in 2 parts: the mohawk at the top, and a short base.

The mohawk at the top uses a different Attachment Point from most prim hairs. So you can mix the mohawk with just about any prim hair in SL :)

Also, you can mix 2 different colors for the mohawk and the base (like a black top and a blonde base), giving you a more dramatic look!

Beware of punk mermaids! :P

Day 342: Getting Started Guide Update #1

The original Getting Started in Second Life Guide focused on getting new residents to a few useful places (namely, Free Dove, NCI, and Yadni/Sarah/GNUbie). It pretty much told new residents to go to these places, spend a couple hours at each place, and read some helpful Notecards.

Ive always wanted to fill in the blanks, by providing new residents with a complete Guide that takes them from Orientation Island, and prepare them for the Dance Clubs :P That means providing the essential information for moving around, interacting with objects/residents, looking up places/events (like Dance Clubs ;P), and dealing with Inventory items (remember wearing those boxes?).

What they do after they get to the Dance Clubs is their own problem... :P

So Im taking a couple "Tutorial Saturdays" to rewrite the "Getting Started in Second Life Guide". Im adding information pages on essential skills to fill in the gaps. This week, its "Movement, Camera Control, and Interaction Guide".

Part of the reason I started this blog is to help new residents. So I hope these updates will prove useful!

Please let me know if theres anything I should change! If youve used the Guide before, I would love to hear what you think :)
