Day 258: Sculpted Prims Tutorial Part 1

Sculpties, anyone? :)
Theres a lot of interest in sculpted prims (sculpties) right now in Second Life. Theres also a lot of discussions and tutorials on sculpties. But things are all over the place and most of the discussions go WAY over my head :P
Im hoping to make sculpties a bit friendlier. At least the basics. So, this is like "Sculpties for Blondes" :)
Im NOT an expert on sculpties...Im just relaying what Ive learned from playing around with them a little bit. I also dont have the money to spend on 3D programs right now, so Im going with the freebie programs :) Before last week, I made smoothies with my Blender and thought Wings belonged on birds. So if youve seen these programs before, you already know more than me :)
If you want more technical information, the Sculpted Prims FAQ on the Second Life Wiki is an excellent resource with lots of links and samples. Also, search for "sculpted prims" in the SL forums.
But if you want to know what sculpties are and a (very) basic intro to tools for making them, then read on...
Of course, this is a multi-part series (because I like to drag them out :P). In this part 1, we are going to talk about what sculpted prims are, make some from existing textures, and then make a simple texture using Wings 3D. In future parts, we will create more complex textures and also look at Blender (in other words, I dont know how they work yet :P)
Whats a Sculpted Prim?
Youve probably seen this pix with the plate of fruits from Linden Labs. The fruit shapes (and the plate) are all sculpted prims.
Sculpties are prims, just like boxes, spheres, tori, etc. Except that sculpties use a small texture file to describe the shape, instead of settings like Path Cut, Hollow, Taper, etc.
These small texture files are called sculpt maps (they have psychedelic colors because they were invented by hippies :P) OK no...their colors describe the shape of the sculptie...sorta where each little portion of the sculptie shape is located.
Because sculpt maps really have a lot of information in them, its not practical to create them using regular paint programs like Photoshop or GIMP. Sculpt maps are generally created using 3D programs like Blender, Wings 3D, Maya, etc. Theres a really nice list of these 3D programs on the Second Life Wiki.
Creating Sculpted Prims
So how do you create a sculpted prim? Its really easy, actually...
Just rez a prim on the ground (like a Box, for example).
Then Edit the prim, go to the Object tab, and change the Building Block Type to "Sculpted".
Thats it! You now have a big wooden sculptie apple :) The apple stem costs extra :P (its a different sculptie)
You can go ahead and resize the apple just like any other prim. You can change the texture and color, even make it semi-transparent or shiny.
Notice that the apple has a wooden texture, just like any other newly created prim. If you want that nice apple texture from the photo, just apply an apple-skin texture to the apple sculptie. The texture works just like any other prim, except it is a bit trickier to line up the texture properly...
If you want to apply a different sculpt map to the prim, just click in the "Sculpt Texture" window and select the new sculpt map. Thats all there is to it...
You do have a bunch of sculpt maps, dont you? :P
Finding Existing Sculpt Maps
OK, so you are probably asking, where can I get some sculpt maps to play around with?
There is a package of sample sculpt maps you can download (sculpt-test.zip) from the Second Life Wiki. This contains 7 sculpt maps: cube, apple, banana, plate, letter-s, apple-stem, and test01. You can upload these textures to SL and apply them to any sculpted prim to try it out.
Note: Some of these sample sculpt maps create sculpties that look inside-out. Im not sure if this is an SL issue or a problem with my computer. Just thought I should mention it in case you see the same thing...
(Since I uploaded these sculpt maps already, you can pick them up for free along with the samples below at Sirena Hair & Fashion. Its in a box called "Sculpted Prims".)
In addition, the Second Life Wiki has an excellent page with lots of sample sculpties. You need to create a small script and use the texture UUID to grab the texture (the instructions are on the page). Be sure you use the textures for the Main Grid (not the Beta Grid or Teen Grid).
If you just want to play with some of these sample sculpties, I also put them in the "Sculpted Prims" box at Sirena Hair & Fashion.
Creating Sculpt Maps
You are probably reading this because you are interested in creating your own sculpt maps. After all, even that cool sculptie push-pin gets boring after a while.
To create sculpt maps, we need a 3D program. There are 2 freebie 3D programs that are great for making sculpt maps: Wings 3D and Blender.
Wings 3D is probably the easiest way to create sculpt maps right now. Wings 3D is relatively easy to learn (at least to do simple things). And theres an excellent sculpt map exporter for Wings 3D, so you can export a sculpt map within minutes of installing the program. Unfortunately, Wings 3D has fewer tutorials than Blender, and doesnt have some of Blender's cool features (like sculpt mode!) So in the long run, it may be harder to make some things using Wings 3D versus Blender.
Blender is an amazing 3D program packed with tons of buttons that do amazing things. Unfortunately, it takes me a while to figure out what those tons of buttons do :P Creating sculpt maps from Blender is also a complicated process right now, at least when you are wearing blonde hair. Theres a Blender template file you can use that makes the process easier. Unfortunately, the Blender program itself will simply take longer to learn. But Blender is definitely worth learning if you plan on making complicated sculpt maps.
Installing Wings 3D
So lets start by installing Wings 3D and setting up the Second Life Sculpted Prims Exporter.
Note: I am not sure if the Wings 3D exporter works on anything other than Windows. There appears to be some debate in the SL forum.
First, download and install the Wings 3D Development Rel: 0.98.36 from the Wings 3D website. Be sure that you use the Development Rel (0.98.36), and not older Stable Rel.
Next, download the Wings 3D exporter from the link in the SL forum. Thanks to Omei Turnbull for creating this great tool!
(Note: If you dont have access to the SL Forums, Omei Turnbull (the author) has kindly made it available for free from PK Pounceworks. The files start with "wpc_sculpty_080707".)
The Wings 3D exporter comes with a bunch of files. Just copy all of them to the Wings 3D Plugins "import_export" directory. This directory is pretty buried. On my computer, its at "C:\Program Files\wings3d_0.98.36\lib\wings-0.98.36\plugins\import_export".
Creating a Sculpt Map in Wings 3D
And heres the Wings 3D main screen. Doesnt look that bad, does it? :)
The Wings 3D exporter supports only spheres. So we are going to create a sphere, make some changes to it, then create a sculpt map from it.
Right-click on the Wings 3D main screen to bring up the popup menu. Click on the little box to the right of the word "Sphere".
This will open the Create a Sphere dialog box.
We need to pick a set of dimensions for the sphere. The exporter only supports one of the following dimensions:
8 sections and 7 slices (avoid this...)
16 sections and 15 slices
32 sections and 31 slices
64 sections and 63 slices
Think of this as the resolution of the sculpt map. The higher the resolution, the more definition you can have in the shape. But at a higher resolution, there are also more points you have to move around.
For now, enter "32" for Sections, and "31" for Slices.
And heres our sphere!
Its actually ready for export as a sculpt map. But lets make some changes to it first to make it a bit more...unusual. We are going to shape it like a mushroom and add some "organic" bumps :)
Remember the 32 Sections and 31 Slices we picked above? We cannot change these dimensions, or else the sculptie exporter wont work. Thats because SL sculpties require very specific dimensions. That means you have to limit the changes to Move, Rotate, Scale, Tweak, and a few other functions that will not alter the dimensions of the sphere.
Click on the Select menu option at the top of your screen, then select the "All Faces" option.
Next, Right-click anywhere on the main window, select "Scale", and "Y".
Move your mouse to the right to stretch the sphere. Left-click on the main screen when you are done.
This step is a little tricky...
First, press the [Spacebar] to de-select everything. The sphere should turn black.
Next, click on the second pyramid in the top middle of the screen. This pyramid means you are going to select an Edge.
Finally, select one of the horizontal Edges in the top half of the sphere, somewhere towards the middle. Its only important that you select a horizontal Edge (and NOT a vertical one). You dont need to be precise...its a mushroom after all :P
Click on the Select menu option at the top of your screen, then select "Edge Loop", and then the "Edge Loop" option.
The middle of the sphere should now have a thin red ring.
Next, click on the Select menu option at the top of your screen, then select "Edge Loop", and then the "Edge Loop to Region" option.
The top of the sphere should now be red.
If the bottom of your sphere turned red, its because the Edge you selected is too low...try again a little further up. You can go back by repeatedly selecting Edit/Undo.
Right-click anywhere on the main window, select "Scale", and "Radial Y".
Move your mouse to the right to make the mushroom cap larger. Left-click on the main screen when you are done.
And we have a mushroom :) But wait! Lets make it more realistic by adding some irregular bumps...
Click on the Tools menu option at the top of your screen, then select "Tweak".
The main screen will change slightly. You will see a bunch of little black squares at the corners around the mushroom.
When you are in Tweak mode, you can click and drag these black squares in or out to modify the shape.
Try it! Grab one and move it around :)
We just want to add some realism to the mushroom by randomly pulling and pushing these little black squares. So tweak away and rough things up!
If you make a mistake, you can press "Ctrl-Z" to undo your change.
To rotate the image, click the middle mouse button. When you are done rotating, click the left mouse button to stop rotating. I know...this takes some getting use to... :P
When you are done tweaking, press the [Esc] key to exit Tweak mode.
Now, lets create the sculpt map...
Select the File menu option at the top, then Export, "Second Life Sculpty (.bmp)...".
Enter a name for the .bmp file. Call it "Sculptie Mushroom.bmp".
Now, lets upload the texture to Second Life...
Upload and Make a Sculptie
Go to the Second Life program. Select File from the top menu and "Upload Image (L$10)...".
Select the "Sculptie Mushroom.bmp" file we just created. At the Preview Image window, click "Upload (L$10)" (This step will cost L$10...)
Once the texture is uploaded, rez a Box on the ground. Edit the Box, and select the Object tab in the Edit window.
Change the Building Block Type to "Sculpted".
Click on the picture above "Sculpted Texture" and select the "Sculptie Mushroom" texture we just uploaded.
You should see something that looks like the mushroom you tweaked in Wings :) Second Life does tend to smooth the edges, so the shape make look slightly different...
Go ahead and change the color and texture, or resize your new sculptie.
Congratulations...you just made your first sculpted prim, complete with your own custom sculpt map! :)
To learn more about Wings 3D, there is a nice tutorial in the Second Life Wiki.
For general Wings tutorial, check out the Puzzled Paul website. Note that most of the tutorials either dont use a sphere, or change the dimensions of the sphere. However, the techniques in the tutorials are useful for learning the program.
Hi cutie! You definitely remind me of someone :)

Thank you, Natalia, for this great tutorial.. already can't wait for Part 2!
Thanks for this Natalia! Those sculpties are already looking less scary...
Miss Zelmanov, you are my hero!
I really, really wanted to start making sculpties. I already had started using freebies in my builds, but didn't quite get how to make them on my own. No longer!
I think sculpties will be even more revolutionary than flexi was. Why, just think of the hats we can make :)
P.S. Thank you for the lovely article on Steam City. I ought have mentioned, if you can make your way to the control room, you can find the controls for the landing gear. Do make sure the lifting propellors are turning beofre raising it though! O_O
Thx for a very informative and easy to follow site :)
Ive been interested in sculpties for awhile now...but was so confuzzled by them lol
You can also find free sculpties at Yadni's junkyard-Newbie Paradi.
Cant wait for the next chapter of Sculpted Prims
Cheers Natalia :)
cuckoo natalia.
too much brilliant all that, really super. alas, I do not manage to download the pluging to export my objects created under wind3d (glass).
can you place to us at the disposal the 2 files which you quote in your article.
you are too brilliant, you are splendid.
I make you large kisses
Philippe shilova
Natalia - great job on a complex topic - but I missed the part about another new cool place to visit in SL!!!! *warm smile*.
A couple footnotes if you don't mind - kind of the frequently-encountered newbie errors list ...
INSIDE-OUTS
If you res an older sculpty like the SL demo ones and it looks inside-out, it's because SL changed the axes for sculpties when they rolled out the 1.16 viewer. A particular sculpty can be fixed by flipping the bmp or tga image horizontally in an image editor like Gimp. If sculpties exported from Wings have this problem, you need to get the updated exporter plug-in - just download it again and reinstall.
WINGS EXPORT ERRORS
So everyone is clear, when Natalia warns about dimensions - she means the number of verticies, edges and faces in your sculpt. Those black point thingies on the surface can not be deleted or added to. The result of an export is a 32x32 (or 64x64) pixel bitmap image. That means each of the 32x32=1024 pixels must define a precise point in space and the other points it hooks to to make a face. Add a vertex and there is no place to store the 1025th pixel in the image. Delete one and the exporter doesn't know how to define the 1024th pixel - hence errors. Once you have errors, your only practical option is to start over from a new sphere. Do test exports along the way to test for new errors so you don't waste time further shaping a damaged sculpt that won't export.
WINGS SPHERE SETTINGS -
Remember to set slices different than the default. It must be set one less than the columns - 32 and 31, 64 and 63.
MISSHAPED SCULPTIES -
Never save a sculpt map image as a jpeg - the compression slightly changes pixel colors which means it not-so-slightly moves those points in 3D space that you so carefully positioned. Need sharp edges? - Use 2-3 rows of points really close to each other to define the sharp point of the bend.
Avoid the 8x8 and 16x16 sculpties - if your shape is that simple, you can probably make it with a traditional prim.
Natalia - Don't forget to mention ROKURO in one of the furture segments - it's ultra fast for certain symmetrical (lathed) shapes - perfect for those
glass beads and bangles on a necklace or bracelet!
Hugs,
Foolish Merlin
You just totally lost your "noob" status!
Are you sure you aren't a geek?
Yasmine, you are welcome! Im working on Part 2 right now :) Trying to figure out what to make... :)
Cazzy, heehee sculpties arent that scary after all...its those programs that are :P Blender is truly nasty!
Virrginia, I totally agree with you: sculpties are really amazing things. I saw some of the things from the Sculpty Competition and they are just amazing. Heehee we can definitely have fun with the hats!
And oh...I didnt find the control room in Stean City. So I have to go back for another look :)
Mystic, thanks for the tip about Yadni's...Im going to go check them out today! And definitely try making some yourself...they are easy to do!
Philippe, the Wings plug-ins are here: http://forums.secondlife.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=26892
The 2 files are in the ".zip" file that you download from this link. Just drop it in the Wings directory and you are ready to create sculpties :)
Foolish, wow, thank you so much for all the great tips! Especially about the inside-out sculpty (I was wondering about that!)
And I was wondering whether to mention ROKURO or not. But now that you brought it up, I think I should :) Plus I wonder if you can import something from ROKURO into Wings for "Tweaking"...that would make it super useful!
Thanks again for your wonderful comment!
Nefertiti, I am not a geek...Im a blonde. The difference is in the magazines we read :P
Natalia, have you tried using Rokuro for sculpties? My eyes were glazing over with all that technical stuff from Wings. With Rokuro, all you do is drag dots to form the shape you need - very easy! You might want to try it out. :D
thank you natalia i wanted to learn how to make sculpties with your tutorial i'l have a way to get started on my learning ^^
cuckoo natalia.
I do not arrive has to return in the forum of secondlife.
is needed a paying account.
I am in free account: ((((
how to make to recover the pluging for Wings3d .
good day and large kisses
Philippe
Deedee, Rokuro is a wonderful tool for making Sculpted Prims! It really does make creating certain shapes super easy :) I was planning to write about it in Part 3... I tried using it to create a basic shape, then tweak/texture it in Wings. It worked great! So I cant wait to share the results :)
Tiana, good luck with your Sculpted Prims project :) I just wanted to show that they are really not that scary (well, some of the programs are, but the sculpties are not :P)
Philippe, oops sorry, I didnt know that only Premium members can go in the forums :P (Thats very nice to know...Thank you for that!)
I found a slightly older version of the plug-in here at Second Citizen forum: http://forums.secondcitizen.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8299&d=1179969631
I believe the newer version is better with importing textures, so it should not affect what you need for exporting...
Natalia...thank you for this lessons...I think that they are the best on the web!!!
Anyone have another link to the Exporter Download? I’ve been searching google for a few days, trying to find another place to download it but, haven’t come across any. Since I’m just a basic member and haven’t bought any L$, I can’t get into the forums to download it :(. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Dhaark
Dear Anonymous, thank you! Im just glad it makes sense :)
Dhaark, you can also get the exporter here:
http://forums.secondcitizen.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8299&d=1179969631 (Thanks for the reminder...I think I will update the main post with this info!)
Ello luv..
First, let me say this is a great tutorial.. but, one thing, has me stumped.
When I go to export, it tells me time and time again, to select ONE object... so I thought maybe I did something wrong, so I redo everything..
And nope, it does it again..
Could you please fill me in on what I did wrong, because I can not export anything.
MH
Morgana, when you export the Sculpt Map, be sure that you select "Export" and not "Export Selected". I think thats the problem.
Also, be sure that theres only 1 object when you export. Try this: select File/New, then create a sphere (32 by 31), then export it right away. Hope this helps!
Hi, i really love your post(s)! There is but one thing i need to get started: The exporter files, solely located on SL forums. I do not have or wish to have a paypal account, and don't use my CC for anything - but SL forums requires payment information (even if you're not a prem. member). I just want to have fun building sculpties for friends :( can't find it anywhere. pls email me at if there is a way to get me a copy!! pls pls plssssssssss thanx! :)
brgrds,
boben
borisebenelli@shaw.ca
Borise, you can download an older version of the Wings 3D Exporter from the Second Citizen Forums (http://forums.secondcitizen.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8299&d=1179969631). This works great unless you are planning to do Part 4 of this tutorial series.
Hi Natalia, thanks for the tutorial, but like someone said above the SL forums are not open to no payment info (not very fair, but understandable I guess) and now Second Citizen is no more? I can't get on it anyway and that's what people have been saying. Is there another link? :(
Valena, Omei Turnbull (the author) posted the new version to PK Pounceworks. Ive updated the tutorial with the new link :)
you are my hero!
I have some question to ask you
how can I build cube in wings3D fix for 16 section and 15 slices?
and do you build 3d object by use 3d max or other?
Manutd, lol Im really not a 3D program expert (I havent seen any of them before I played with Wings). And I dont have any of the expensive 3D programs (mostly just free/cheap stuff :P) You might want to check the SL Forums or the SL Wiki (link is in this post) for discussions on all the 3D programs.
The easiest way to make a cube thing is to use TOKOROTEN, draw a square, and make a sculpt map. You can then import this into Wings and Tweak it as needed.
Hope this helps :)
I extracted wings3D plugins for exporting sculpt map. However, I got confused where to put those extraced files in which of wings folder.
Manutd, it depends on where you installed Wings. On my computer, its at "C:\Program Files\wings3d_0.98.36\lib\wings-0.98.36\plugins\import_export". Look for the "import_export" folder.
Also, you dont *have* to install the plug-in. I think you can just select File/Install Plug-in. Havent tried that, but it should work...
Yes Yes very good ... to create single objects to upload! At cost of 10L$ each!!!! If I want to create something significant rather then a mushroom?? Do I have to spend thousands L$ (that I haven't??)
This politic of paying to upload have to be canceled, damn!
By the way, I'm wondering if I can use this trick:
Create a 64x64 sphere, than cancel some unused vertices and create other objects. I finally link them all in one unique object that still have 64x64 vertices.
What do u think about?
Doctor, you do get used to the L$10 upload charge after a while. A few hours of camping should give you plenty to work with anyway...
Its not that bad for sculpties, because you can see what it looks like in Wings (or whatever 3D program) before you upload.
Also, a couple people have suggested using the Beta Grid for testing. It wont cost you real L$ to upload there...so you can play and get it right first, before uploading the final texture.
Lol and you are going over my head with the trick :) Im not sure it would work, cause it sounds like it needs to change the texture (and you cant change the texture inside SL as far as I know). It might be easier to use the Beta Grid...
Damn Natalia, it didn't work. You start with a number of vertices and you must finish with it. So I must upload single pieces to SL. I must look around about camping, to gain some money so?
Just an other questions:
Why my spherical prims in SL are hexagonal? I thought it was LOD, but even seen very close, the prims have six sides! They are ugly.
... Solved. I had objetc mesh detail set to minimum! :))
Doctor, lol Im so glad you found the problem! Im really not a 3D program expert so you really are going way over my head (blonde fishes have little heads ;P)
Really, all I do is make simple sculptie things with Wings 3D and ROKURO :)
Im not sure if you are a Premium member, but all the advanced 3D people seem to hang out in the SL Forums. Thats where all the crazy 3D stuff happens ;P
How can I develop sea or canel in SL ? Is avatar can swimming in the water? How can I do that (script or something)?
Manutd, you can make "water" in SL in 2 ways: There is a "sea level" setting for sims (its usually 20M). Anything below this level is underwater. So if you can lower the land under this level, you have water :)
The other is to use prims to create the illusion of water above the "sea level". This is typically done by using a water texture and animation to make the water move. Check out "Emeraldever's" shop for some free splashable prim water :)
Really good stuff - nice store too... going through the tutorials now!
Moosecat, good luck with the tutorials :)
Moosecat, good luck with the tutorials :)
Okay, bear with me, this is gonna be wordy.
First off thanks as always Natalia, I wouldn't even have tried this if it weren't for your amazingly easy to follow tutorials.
Which means that this is actually all your fault :)
I saw a really cool floating island that was made by applying a sculpty texture to a mega prim and thought "I can do that".
I made my texture, fidgeted and fussed till it looked like an upside down floating island and uploaded it.
I didn't want to experiment in a public sandbox with a mega prim so I just created a 10 x 10 x 10 box and applied the texture and it worked! It looked mostly like I wanted it to look and I was happy as could be.
Until I went to stand on it. For some reason it seems to be much larger than it appears - say three times as high, but there's nothing there. When I stand on top of it I'm actually standing several meters above the apparent top.
I tried viewing transparent but there's nothing showing up between the soles of my feet and the top of the prim. I'm standing in mid air. I can walk, and sit, but all three of four meters above the apparent top of the prim.
While this might be sort of cool if I was trying to do it, I have no clue how I managed it or more importantly how to turn it off. I suppose I could switch the prim to a phantom but that would interfere with walking around the surface as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks as always
Ahh, never mind. It took some fidgeting but I figured it out. Or at least I've figured out one way to do it, there's probably a better one.
I used the flatten tool to - well, flatten the top of the sphere, then moved the flat top down until it was roughly level with the original equator making a half sphere.
The trouble appears that SL "remembers" where the top of the sphere was when I do it that way.
The solution for those of you sitting on the edge of your seats, is to use the flatten tool to level off the top, then use the Select Inverse tool to switch so that the rest of the sphere is selected and move it up.
This leaves me with the top where I want it and the bottom where I want it, but with a sort of "fence" around the edge. I used selecte edge loop to select the edge of the fence, then moved that down to where I wanted it.
See, wasn't that simple :)?
Ilsa, wow, looks like you really played with giant sculpties! :P
I read somewhere that sculpties are treated as spheres. Im not sure SL takes all the bumps into account. So if you walk on a sculptie with a really weird shape, it might look like you are walking on a sphere. Im not really sure, because I havent really played with large sculpties...
I was a little premature, that didn't actually y'know, work :)
It worked fine with a simple sphere that I halved, but my fancy sculpty still had the big invisible phere shape.
More jiggery pokery and I came up with a sort of fix. I made the main prim phantom, then duplicated it and set the height to .01 and positioned it on top of the other one to form a platform on which to walk and build my empire of the skies (bwa ha ha).
Of course this leads to the question of how can one join a phantom and a non-phantom prim without making the whole thing phantom?
Ilsa, lol I have no idea what you are doing ;P
But I know that you cannot join a Phantom prim to a non-Phantom one. However, you can put them on top of one another in the same spot. Theres no need to join them unless you need them to be a single object.
Is there a way to take an OBJ file sculptie, such as one from ZBRUSH, and use the SL exporter to put it into Second life. I know i can put it into wings3d, but when i try to use the SL exporter, it says unsupported mesh size. Probably because its not a sphere from one of those dimensions stated in the tutorial. Any suggestions?
sorry, being more specific, I was able to take the zbrush file into wings3d, but wasn't able to export it via the SL exporter.
Dear Anonymous, lol thats a topic thats a bit over my head (Ive never seen ZBrush :P). But I know there are active discussions on these subjects in the SL Forums!
You might want to try creating a sphere in Wings3D, export it to an OBJ file, edit it in ZBrush (without changing the dimensions), then bring it back to Wings3D. But there might be a direct way to export from ZBrush (check with the Forums!)
I know theres a special program for 3D Max (theres a sim somewhere for that). So there might be one for ZBrush as well. Good Luck!
Great idea by making the sphere in wings first Natalie :D. There actually isnt a way to download OBJ files directly into SL yet, the kind that ZBRUSH uses, but supposedely there will be soon. Till then i'll use your idea. Thanks a bunch :D.
Dear Anonymous, I hope that works for you! Good luck :)
I seem to be having trouble with wings. I cant upload for secondlife because the option is not there. What do i do?
Ajzialheara, be sure that you install the SL Exporter plug-in for Wings :)
It works now for importing, but i worry there is a plugin i am missing for saving as bmp. when i save as bmp it crashes on me and just closes. Ive gone through all of the plugins that came with the program and it is still crashing. Halp! >.<
Ajzialheara, are you using the exact versions of the Wings 3D and Exporter listed in the tutorial? Its important (diff versions prob wont work).
Yep. I am. It still crashes on me T-T
Ajzialheara, lol oh dear...now thats over my head. If you have access, you might want to ask someone on the SL Forums (you can actually ask the creator of the exporter there!)
I have successfully created a weird little mushroom thingie following the tut - thank you - great explanations :) - when I get to the Export as a bmp for SL - it tells me I must select something... I hav e no idea how to select...
Amaranthim, be sure you have the SL Exporter installed. And select "Export" instead of "Export Selected". You should see an option for "Second Life Sculpty" :)
Natalia - I was reading some of the prior posts and someone around August last year encountered the same problem. The answer given at the time was to create a simple sphere and import that. Can't really see much point to that- if all we wanted was a sphere they already exist in SL. I followed your tut and made the little mushroom. I want to see the little mush in SL :)
I do have the importer installed - I just cannot fathom how to select so that my mushy gets in there....
Besides it-what more complex shape have you accomplished and were you able to import it?
If one wanted (eventually- I know I have to walk before I can run :)) to make say, a tree, would you have to make the trunk and branches separately for import?
Thanks to every one that contributes- I have learned much reading others' posts.

Amaranthim, making the sphere just verifies that the sculptie exporter is working, and avoids the problems with Unsupported Size (its a highly recommended step). Lol you can tweak the sphere if you prefer ;P
Ive made mainly flower petals, jewelry pieces, and hats with sculpties. Its just something I do for fun.
Most designers do use multiple sculpties and regular prims to make things like trees. Sculpties are just a diff kind of prim...usually for making shapes thats hard to do with existing prims.
Good luck! ;)
I couldnt find the page for it and was wondering about where to find the script to keep your skirt in place. I found one on slexchange that someone is selling for 3500L and i found that rather over priced.
Ajzialheara, its part 2 of the flexi skirts tutorial (under the Build page) :)
thank you!
