Day 184: Silverscreen

In case you havent heard (or havent gotten the chance to go): Welcome to Silverscreen, a newly opened sim that promotes movies. And "300" is probably first in a number of movie promos we will soon be seeing in Second Life.

This isnt just a building with a couple of movie posters. Its an entire sim with multiple exhibit sites!

And beautifully built structures...

The best part is all the free stuff here!

Many of these posters, drawings, and corresponding movie shots are free for the taking (Buy for L$0).

You can even pick up free Spartan costumes for men and women from the village area. Thats the reason why you see so many Spartans walking around SL now :) I think ROMA is going to be busy for a while :)

Need a spear and shield? :P

Actually, you can take home a lot of things from here. If you like something you see, try Right-clicking on it and see if "Buy" comes up. Hey, I managed to get some cheese from there...

They even have sketches from the movie, and a free book you can take...

I havent seen the movie "300" yet, but reliable sources tell me that there are lots of cute guys in it :) (um...did I say that out loud? That must be my evil side talking...)

Whether you have seen the movie or now, come check out the Silverscreen sim. Hopefully, more movies will be promoted in this way!

To come to Silverscreen, click on Search, select Places, and enter "silverscreen" as the keyword. The SLURL is Silverscreen (127,98,33).

Have you seen those black-and-white movies? Where actresses wear those glamorous mermaid dresses to movie screenings on the red carpet?

Well, mermaid skirts are sorta coming back. OK, they never went away, but I notice them more now on celebs :P Since Im a mermaid, its time to make my own :)

The skirt design is based on the Ralph Lauren collection. The top is based on a silk dress designed by Madonna :)

The skirt is similar to the original Ascot Dress. It is made with a mesh skirt base, and Left and Right Lower Leg attachments for the skirt pleats.

And since belts are the main accessory this season, I added some edges and details to the belt, which made it super nice. I love Shininess :)

The best part about the Silverscreen sim is their use of Second Life's abundant wind as their source of renewable energy! If we all followed Silverscreen's example, Second Life would not have to depend on energy sources that pollute the Earth...

(Um...that must be Miss Second Life talking...)

Hey! I was there and completely missed the village. Do I feel stupid!

BTW, Natalia, you're getting too famous, starting to getting quoted (good) without attribution (bad):

I am curious as to your lag experience - I was there last week and it was horrible!! Sure, the movie trailer played well, but moving around the complex was painfully slow, could only manage like 5 fps.

Sure looks nice, though. :-)

Sasly, dont worry, you can always go back for your spear and cheese :P

Thanks for keeping an eye out! I will let Google know so they can hopefully stop them! Thank you!

Tiana, I did buy a couple new hairs, but not that bad :P I was much much worse before (literally waiting for my allowance so I can go shopping!)

Wrath, I went to Silverscreen at a slow time, so it wasnt that bad. But I can definitely imagine, particularly when it first opened! Im sure it feels like Ahern on the weekends :)

I'm a movie buff so thanks for the tip, Natalia :) It's amazing how you always find these new places...

Aleia, if you love movies, the Silverscreen sim is definitely for you :) I hope they make more sims for movies, even some old classics! (There is a Casablanca sim already :) )

Hi Natalia,

I'm intrigued about your mermaid skirt here! I'm trying to make something similar myself and am struggling! I have been using flexi panels and have tried hand placing, using half of the panels created by the looprez generator, but I have terrible problems with them looking good in all poses or when i'm walking. The tip for attaching them to the lower legs is a good one, but I was wondering if you had any tips about how you created these panels? I have been using full length flexi skirt panels, but of course am struggling to get them to only show at the bottom, not come through the top when I change poses etc. I'm also looking for tutorials on the best way to place flexi panels on skirts that may not be a full skirt. For instance if I wanted a straight in-world created skirt with just a few floaty, flexi panels attached to it, I have the same problem with knowing how to place them and where to attach them to. Thanks...I just love this blog by the way...it is my bible and has been the only reason I've been able to successfully become a designer in SL :-)

oh one more question...Do you use a posing stand when you attach the flexi skirts or hand place panels? i just find they look so different on the posing stand than when I'm standing naturally or with poses?

Rachael, there really is not way to prevent the 2 skirts from separating (or their tops to occasionally show), unless you use a mermaid AO. But then most people dont like to look like mermaids on land :P

So I tried to hide the 2 skirts as best as I can. The 2 skirts overlap considerably, so there is never a gap unless you are in an extreme pose. Gaps are probably more noticeable than splits or things poking out. And if you used solid colors with a repeating pattern, it helps to hide the skirt as well (black is wonderful for that too).

There are basically 3 attachment areas on the legs: Pelvis/Stomach, Upper Leg (left/right), and Lower Leg (left/right). (OK, there are hips too, but Ive never used them) It just depends on which part of the body you want the attachment to follow. The Day 98 Hermoine outfit is the best example, cause it used ALL of them :P

I make skirts with LoopRez Deluxe, so the pose stand really helps in creating the skirt initially. But when I fit the skirt, I normally just bring it into position while standing. You can tell whether the skirt is centered by looking at the display in the middle/top of your screen. One of the numbers (I think "Y") should be 0.00 when everything is centered. Then I just have to worry about moving it back and forth, and up/down...
