Day 140: Sunday Search for Privacy

Its Sunday again :)
(BTW, this is the "Dark" version of the Phantom of the Opera Gown. Caterin suggested it... and it came out gorgeous!
I also gave in and added bling to the earrings. You can always turn them off by saying "bling off". BTW, if you have the original Opera gown, just send me an IM, and Ill send you a set of earrings with bling :) )
Ever need a little privacy when you are in Second Life?
Of course, you can rent or buy some land so you can build a house or skybox. Thats an expensive option if you just need an occasional place to change your clothes.
You can also find a private spot in an obscure sim, turn on your Mini-Map, and keep an eye out for intruders. But keeping an eye out could get tiring...
What if you can have a private skypad wherever you are allowed to build (say a public Sandbox or a sim where you have build permission)?
The "Workspace Buster - Test Run" is a freebie gadget I picked up from Yadni's Junkyard. Its in the 51 Free Gadjets box dated 12/05 (the actual folder is named "51 Free Gadjets -12/04-").
The concept is great: You rez this black and white box on the ground and just sit on it. It will take you to a pre-determined height (set to 300M by default) and rez a workspace beneath you. Unfortunately, the gadget from Yadni's doesnt work. Its missing 1 command to rez the workspace. So it takes you to 300M for a skydive :P
I added the rezzing command back to script. So it is now a free working gadget. You can pick up a free copy of the working Workspace Buster at (where else? :P) Sirena Hair & Fashion. Its in a box labeled "Privacy/ Skybox".
Just drag and drop the "Workspace Buster - Fixed" object from your Inventory to the ground. It will look like the black and white cube in the pix above. Just Right-click on the cube and select "Sit Here". By default, it will take you to 300M and create a 30Mx30M skypad beneath you.
The Workspace Buster is great for Sandboxes. Just click on Search, select the Places tab, and enter "sandbox" as the keyword. There are many Sandboxes to choose from.
Just remember to clean-up after yourself by deleting your skypad when you are done. Just say "kill" out loud in Chat. This will delete the skypad.
Since AV's cannot fly above 200M unassisted, anything above 200M is fairly private. Good enough for a change for clothing. Of course, if you want real privacy, you can always go a little higher.
You can adjust the Height you want the Workspace Buster to go up to.
To adjust the Height, rez the "Workspace Buster - Fixed" object on the ground. Right-click on it and select "Edit". Select the Content tab. Double-click on the "Rezzer Script" script to edit it.
There is a line at the top that reads: "integer height = 300;". Just change the number from 300 to whatever height you want. Some Sandboxes limit the height, so Id recommend staying below 700M.
Click "Save" and wait for the "Save complete." message. Close the script editing window. And close the Edit window.
Remember to take a copy of your newly modified Workspace Buster. Right-click on the Workspace Buster, select "More>", and "Take Copy". There should be a new "Workspace Buster - Fixed" object in your Inventory, in the Objects folder.
Have fun in your new private space :)
***Update: Resident Rush Giha created an improved version of the Workspace Buster called "Private Skybox for Builders". Rush is kind enough to release the Private Skybox for free. I put a copy of it in the "Privacy/ Skybox" box in the Tutorial Supplies area of Sirena :)
P.S. I cut the ribbon at a friend's store opening today :)
Valentino Tendaze opened his store Valentino's Design Studios (SLURL: Achado (231,165,88)). Valentino's carry a line of scripted greeting cards, including Valentine's cards. The Valentines cards are only $10L :)
Thats me with the giant scissors, blessing the store and declaring it opened. Ive never done something like that, so it was kinda cool! Heehee, I feel like a celeb or something :P

Great Nat:
Good Idea your private pad. You are going to help lots of people.
Last sunday I found a poor nude girl into my home (I had not set restricted access yet). I think she was editing apearance or something like that and hide into my house. I had to turn around inmediately and wait she is gone. hehehe.
Kind Regards.
Trouble
Keeping an eye out is a little easier with Yadni's Avatar Detector - I even keep a modified version at home! BUT, until I had a house, I used a sandbox dome with a one-way view that was built by a friend. I'm not sure if he's planning on selling it or not, but it's a great alternative to going high up. Only the owner can open the door and there's plenty of room to change clothes or build a shoe! I'll keep you posted on that front - it's a great product for newbies.
On another note - I love the dress! The Mata Hari Jewels would look great with it! Have you heard about the Mata Hari Quest created by Random Calliope?
Mwua-ha-ha-ha!
~~Tootles~~
Taffy
The dress looks so fabby on you Natalia!
i have a box like that too! its great for building when you dont know how many prims your creation will take and you dont have to worry if you lose a prim somwhere.
i still need to test my theory that i can rez a full house in there. if i can manage to ling the house and furniture together i would have a portable house and without having to worry about prims ever!
of course i havent tested it yet so i have no idea if its possible but if it does work. a lot of people could have really cool houses for free hehe.
Natalia!
There's a contest going on in Caledon, and I think you should enter it...
You'd do a very good job and I think you'd have a great chance of winning!
:)
Natalia, here's a link re. the Caledon contest:

That’s much more fun to Rez than what I do in a sandbox. I make a cube 10x10x10 hollow out 95% add a thin top, just for funzies I texture the inside with windows to see out but no one can see in. This way when I make those nice shoes or skirts and *wear* them I don’t get the funny looks or bombed.
Trouble, yep thats what the Workspace Buster was designed for (or what I wanted to use it for). A quick change of clothes. Its not a substitute for a house, but its great when first starting out!
Taffy, thats almost when I did when I first started. The only issue with a ground-level structure is that someone can still Alt-cam inside (since you can tell someone is inside with the Mini-Map). Ive always wanted a quick skybox like this!
I havent heard about the Mata Hari Quest, but will go check it out today :) Sounds like fun!
Caterin, thank you so much for suggesting it! Im tempted to mess with the colors on a couple other gowns... but Im restraining myself :P
Tina, yes, you can have a fully house in there, up to (I think) 255 prims. Thats the max # of prims in a single object. Thats quite a house :)
Dear Anonymous, thank you so much for the tip! I have to go check it out!
Caterin, thanks for the link! Wow, it looks interesting. Victorian? Hmmm... need to think up a gown! :)
Jackson, its so true that you need to do at least something in a sandbox, or else risk getting shot or bombed :P Hope the Workspace Buster is helpful!
I love the Workspace Buster. It is great for a newbie to find a private place to change clothes and stuff.
Katie, Im so glad you found it useful! Thats what its suppose to do. The funny thing is that I see a lot of them in sandboxes now :) So you might need to change the height to get some real privacy :P
Natalia - just a quick note to say thanks for posting this! The Workspace Buster is one of the coolest things that I've come across yet in SL. Going to edit the script to send it a little higher, but it's awesome and I do appreciate it!
Klipang Torok
Klipang, you are welcome! Its been very useful for me as well...I always use it when Im in a sandbox now :)
BTW, you can also change the "workpad" that appears. Just replace the one in the Contents tab with one that you created...
Hi Natalia, about flying high. There is a flight feather, but I am sure you know about it ;)
Maryna
Maryna, no, I actually dont have a flight feather. I have a mermaid swimming thing that does something similar...but I can never find it when I get the rare urge to fly high :P Heehee but mermaids arent suppose to fly anyway :)
Seriously though, I still use the Workspace Buster for the occasional stop at the Sandbox...it does provide a *little* more privacy :)
Hi Natalie
I have been in your shop yesterday , but could not find the Workspace Buster, or am I blind ?
svat
Dear Anonymous, the Workspace Buster is with the Tutorial Supplies (right under the big mermaid sign, in the panel labeled Tutorial Supplies). Thanks for the reminder...it seems I should put some signs in the store! :)
ok 1st cool idea!! but 2nd you guys know that clothing can be swiched with out you getting nude.
For example if youre wearing a shirt and from you're inventory you choose a diffrent shirt and left click on it and choose wear the new shirt will replace the current shirt without revealing a thing you see.
hope that makes sence. but the skybox makes a great spot to build or model without being bugged by outher folks
thanks!
Celena Jewell
Celena, lol its funny, but I generally dont change in public...even now. I might occasionally switch to a prepared outfit or change a single item as you mentioned. But I still like to build outfits in a private place... Its a weird carry-over from RL, I guess :P
Hi Natalia - thanks for the great blog! I tried the workspace buster in a sandbox but i'm not going anywhere! i sit on it and nothing happens . . . what am i doing wrong? I would really like it to work !
Zubbie, Ive noticed that some sandboxes do not allow scripts. The Workspace Buster wont work in those sandboxes :(
You can tell by looking at the little icons at the top middle of your screen. So when in doubt, try another sandbox...
hi Natalia
Yep, thanks for the tip, i tried a different sandbox and it's all working!
truly excellent blog :)
Zubbie, oh good. The script thing can be tricky sometimes!
Hey Natalia,
I wanted to thank you for the great tutorials you've put up. But while I know that you didn't build it I've been having a problem with the Privacy Box. It seems that if I put one down and sit on it, it does nothing.
I've poked around a bit in the object and it doesn't seem to have an actual script with it. I figured you might like to know.
Still working on my hair, only a complete costume to go after that. :) Thanks for all the tips.
Kuma, the "Workspace Buster" is the thingie that will make the platform in the sky.
The "Private Skybox for Builders" is a new skybox created by Rush Giha. You need to Open this package and Copy it to Inventory before you can use it. But it contains a much better skybox :)
natalia, once again, faboulus job!
i was working on the prim boots yesterday in a sandbox and just before i was finished, everything went into lost+found! *sighs
apparently the sandbox i was in only had a very short time for building stuff and that being my first attempt, i needed a bit of time! plus, my mouse isn't playing nice, so cameracontrols is a bugger and i have to get used to the arrow-camera-control first!
i love your blog! :-)
gives me so many ideas! now i just have to figure out, how to do them! ;-)
greetz
Ontrack Offcourse
me again!
i just thought, if i got the concept wrong and my built stuff still get's deleted, if i'm in a sandbox, but using the workspace buster?
maybe you can shed some light?
ty
Ontrack Offcourse
ps: do you have a tut, how to make a prim jacket or jumper?
unless you don't want to tell us all your tricks! ;-)
Ontrack, many of the Sandboxes have a 5 hour return, so you should have a good amount of working time. When it sends things back to your Lost+Found, just pull them out and rezz them again to continue working :)
The Workspace buster doesnt prevent things from being returned. In fact, the Workspace buster itself will be returned to you after 5 hours. It's just a place where you can get some privacy to work...
As for prim jackets or jumpers, lol I dont have any particular secrets :P Most jackets Ive made are combinations of texture and prims. The prims are typically used for highlights (like a collar or sleeve). They are just prim pieces you place around your AV...
BTW, prim clothing items make things difficult to fit. You might want to keep that in mind when creating them...
Thank you so much for sharing the privacy box dear. I really appreciate it. I've only been in SL a few months and spend most my time working on things in public sandboxes and I prefer privacy while working. Having people looking at you while you are working is a bit uncomfortable for me.
Thanks!
Alanna, Im so glad its helpful! Its def a nice thing to have in your inventory ;) Good luck on your projects :)
