Day 111: Sleeping Beauty in Avilion

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess named Briar-rose who fell into an enchanted slumber for 100 years.

When she woke, she found herself in a strange land...



A land of lakes and castles...



Of woodland creatures great and small...



Avilion Grove, the sign says. A strange name, she thought. Yet such a peaceful and beautiful place.



A place of treehouses, horses, and magical creatures!



Even a romantic ballroom. If only my Prince were here, she thought... :P

Avilion Grove and Avilion Mist are 2 beautiful Medieval-themed sims that support very light role-playing. The role-playing is casual and voluntary, without the strict rules of many other role-playing sims. And Avilion is a peaceful sim...no combat! :)

Anyone is welcome to visit and wander about Avilion. Medieval dress is encouraged, though does not appear to be enforced. Many people there appear to wear modern formal wear. However, clothing is REQUIRED :) The only area with a dress code is the formal ballroom (and they give out free tuxedos and gowns outside).

Avilion is more like a romantic garden than a role-playing sim. There are gorgeous paths that wind through flowering trees, swan boats that sail down a stream, romantic walks by the waterfalls, and a wedding chapel. There is even a hedge maze with some surprises inside (bring your significant other :D).

Avilion also has a number of stores with Medieval-style clothing and equipment. So add shopping to things to do here!

To come to Avilion, click on Search, select the Places tab, and enter "avilion" as the keyword. The SLURL is Avilion Grove (20,127,22).



As you have probably guessed, this is Sleeping Beauty's gown.

Specifically, I modeled it after K.Y. Craft's wonderfully illustrated version of Sleeping Beauty. Amazon has a clearer view of the book cover. This is based on the original version from the Grimm Brothers' tale. The princess's name was Briar-rose, not Aurora as in the Disney version.

I couldnt make the gown match the picture. I made and fitted the transparent collar pieces, but they really did not look good in SL. So, I changed the collar design :)

As for the long pretty Medieval sleeves, I cant think of a good way of creating them using flexi prims. I tried using just 1 flexi prim, which looked stiff and my arm kept flying through it. I tried a skirt-like object, which looked really weird when gaps open up. I tried anchoring pieces of flexi sleeve to the forearm...and it looks like they are anchored to the forearm :P

The beauty of the outfit is the 2 layers of sleeves (gold sleeves under the outer robes). I replicated that effect using prim sleeves with a textured sleeves underneath. So the gold sleeves only peek through for certain arm positions.



Oh, and the belt! The gemstones are "real" prims :) There are 16 colored stones around the belt, giving the outfit that real princess touch :) I placed them by hand, using the Prim Positioning technique. About half way through, I realized I could probably have used LoopRez to do the same thing. Oh well...old habits :P



It is in this fabled land that Briar-rose met her beloved Prince Blue Poseball.

And then the marriage of the Prince with Briar-rose was celebrated with all splendor, and they lived contented to the end of their days. :)
