Day 109: Bad Neighborhood

You know, ever since I went to that masquerade ball at Transylvania a few weeks ago, Ive been feeling...um... thirsty. So my friend told me to go visit City of Lost Angel's, where I could probably find a good place to drink.

Well, seems like a nice enough place. A little dirty perhaps. Must be all the smoke coming from the factories. Where's the environmental people when you need them?

Lost Angel's is certainly a busy place! Full of pale people walking around. I guess there arent any beaches nearby...

Heehee, these people care about their teeth and eyes! They even have versions for their dentures...:P

You know, this place has an awful lot of alleys! Dont these people drive around?

Ouch! They ought to watch those manhole covers. I fell into the sewers again!

Oooh...look that that pretty red ball...

Hey, I didnt do anything...honest! I barely touched that pretty red ball, and I ended up here! What are those danglely thingies? OMG, its the new hair from Gurl6!

Thank goodness I finally got out of that creepy place.

Ah good, a hospital. Finally a clean place where I can wash my hands!

Eeeewww...this hospital is worse than the sewers!

Yes, Im in Lost Angel's. Can I get a taxi please? Um...hello? Helloooo? Is anyone there?

Welcome to the City of Lost Angel's, where vampires, demons, werewolves, fallen angels, and other Goths roam the streets and alleyways. The City was built by a talented fashion/accessory design who specializes in Goth clothing and, according to the signs: "the best vampire fangs in SL" :)

City of Lost Angel's is a role-playing sim. The theme is dark, focused on all the action and things you typically see in modern vampire movies. There is a fair amount of violence (gunfire being the most noticeable), bloodsucking, and...um...other things (the latter being mostly behind the scenes). But the main focus is role-playing.

Admittedly, I was nervous at first when I arrived, with one eye on the button to TP me Home. But the sim rules were reassuring. If you do not wish to role-play, you dont have to. The sim has a policy of "open role-play", so you can be who you want, as long as you respect others. You are quite free to roam around the streets, explore, and watch the vampires run after demons :P I was there for nearly 2 hours striking weird poses and taking pix, and no one bothered me (didnt even get a "Hey Sexy" :P). And they cant shoot you if you are not wearing a combat meter (and you dont have to wear one).

Lost Angel's supports a wide number of races and character types (not mermaids, unfortunately :P). When you first come here, I would recommend that you come as a human or Goth dressed in modern attire, just out of respect for the environment. You can come wearing freebie jeans and T-shirt, just dont run around naked or they WILL shoot at you :)

Please be sensitive and not interrupt other people role-playing. Its really bad to be in the middle of an intense dialog and have someone walk up and ask, "So what do you guys do here?" If you are new to SL role-playing, particularly in a Goth sim, spend some time and watch the people there first. If you have questions, ask people via IM. If you wish to comment in open Chat, put the comment in double parenthesis: ((just like this)). This indicates the remark is out-of-character, and should be ignored in role-play.

Of all the major Goth role-playing sims, I found City of Lost Angel's and Transylvania with the most open policy to visitors. So if you want to take a walk on the wild side, check out City of Lost Angel's. Click on Search at the bottom of your screen, select the Places tab, and enter "lost angel" (no "s") as the keyword. The SLURL is Satellite (12,178,333).

Warning: This outfit is not intended for use in Caledon. May cause others to faint, be nauseous, get dizzy, or run away screaming :P

I saw a pix in a magazine recently that had an outfit with lots of buckles. So I thought it might be kinda cool to do one. I borrowed the buckle from the Trendy Outfit and cloned the heck out of it :)

Then I went to work on the top. Ive seen a few Goth tops with that swirly tribal pattern, so I thought I might try making one. After experimenting with Paths in Photoshop, I got addicted and went nuts :P The original version of this outfit had cool lighting effects and patterns all over the place, including stuff down the arms. But it didnt look good after I uploaded it (because it looked "painted-on" and the elbow bends). I had to scale it back a bit.

Oh, and I used dark lace on the slip because it is a texture map skirt. You can use all the transparency you want on texture map clothing without encountering display problems. The display problems only happen in prim clothing (like prim skirts). So its lots of lacy slips from now on :)

Heehee heres my favorite ride in the whole City :) Giddy up! Take me home, you little devil! :P

Hee--you're probably right about it not being quite the thing for a Caledonian ball--though Caledon does have a Victorian-Goth sim (The Moors). Think more Bram Stoker than Anne Rice.

I think the main problem with the transparencies and prims comes about with multiple alpha channels that overlap. I made a Victorian underskirt with lace on the prim attachment. Since it's a single prim, there is no conflict. The key is that I only had the lace texture on the outer surface. The inner surface and edge were painted with light grey (or, essentially the lace would overlap the other side)

If you keep it sparse, it also can work. I have a reproduction Worth dress (not made by me, but by the talented Duchess Shinlei Flasheart) that has multiple flexi lace panels. She effected it by laying them far enough apart that they don't overlap with a solid texture second layer beneath.

If you want to look at either, feel free to call on me inworld.

Sickle, dont you love the lace slip look :) Im so glad at least that works without transparency problems! :)

Alyse, thank you! :) I put it in the store already :) Heehee

Virrginia, ooh...did you say Bram Stoker as in Dracula? The movie? The one with lots of pretty gowns? :P Hmmm...I need to check the movie sites to see the gowns :)

And thanks for the tips about transparency panels, particularly with the solid texture. I am going to try that next week with a gown I have planned :)

Tina, City of Los Angel's definitely has some neat products. I have to go check out this shoulder guard :) Heehee and yes, those alleys are kinda scary :P

I was just a tourist and didnt RP while I was there. Probably too dark for me anyway. But as an RP sim, it is always busy...and people is what makes a good RP sim!

Thank you Caterin! That is indeed an honor coming from you, particular with all the gowns you own! :) Cant wait to go on our next adventure together :)

City of Lost Angel's (CoLA to us regulars) is my home :P

Not to sound biased here, but out of all the roleplay areas I've visited and observed, CoLA has some of the best players and the most atmospheric gaming environment. Not all the roleplay is "dark". Many players just like to hang out like regular people and there are also occasional DJ sessions (most popular is Sunday at 7pm SLT).

If you do come visit again, which I hope you do, I'll keep a look out for you :P

Faye, I totally agree with you about the City of Lost Angel's. I visited a couple other Goth-oriented sims and the role-playing is much darker and violent. So Angel's is definitely "nice" by comparison.

Im just a big chicken :P I was frankly a bit scared with all the gunshot and strange characters lurking about. But I did feel more comfortable after some time. Now I actually send people to Angel's to check out Goth RP.

I appreciate the offer to watch out for me :) Ill try to swing by one of these DJ sessions :)

Hey there :) Another CoLA regular and thought I would thank you for the review.

One correction, we do take mermaids and anything else weird. there is a group called the supernaturals which basically is the city catch all. Don't fit into the others, then talk to us.

We have lots of odd creatures in the group. Everything from Pixies and Sidhe, Naga and shape changers to Driders (ie Me :))

Thanks again though for the review and for the chuckle on the commentary by the pictures at the top. And yes the little demon ride is quite fun :D

Adding to what Speyeder said about mermaids, I *am* one... part of the time. ()Otherwise, I'm a pixie... or a demon... or a unicorn, as it stands right now. Ah, the benefits of being a supernatural hybrid. :3

Again, we may be marketed as dark (and can certainly perform so, particularly with the current madness) but we do not stick to any sets ideas or the like. Heck, Spey and I are trying to organize and role-played food fight in the bar sometime. I'm not sure about the other factions, but the Supernatural Clan incorporates family elements, housing multiple children and their relatives. As such, CoLA is a book you can't judge by it's cover.

If you're ever interested in an in-depth tour when I'm online (and you're able to get into town), feel free to give me a jingle and I'll see what I can do.

Oops... sorry about the crazy mass of a link to the proof of fins. ^^; HTML is not my friend sometimes...

Speyeder, thanks for stopping by. And hey! What do you mean mermaids are weird :P Mermaids look just like everyone else when out of the water anyway :)

Terry, you look really cute as a deep water siren :) City of Lost Angels is certainly an open community. I enjoyed visiting and often refer people there.

Thank you for the offer of a tour. Perhaps I will see you there sometime and we can have a food fight :)
