Day 88: Vanity in New Orleans and Satin/Silk Textures

Welcome to Jackson Square, New Orleans in Second Life! Nelson Kelley showed me this really cool sim a couple days ago (thanks Nelson!).
The Big Easy was rebuilt in Second Life as a charity effort to provide aid to hurricane victims. Its a pretty amazing reproduction of the city...well, since Ive never been there, it looks pretty amazing! :)
Theres the St. Louis Cathedral. The insides are even more spectacular, complete with altar, pew, flowers, and poseballs, ready for a wedding! A true cathedral in every sense.
And of course, the world famous Cafe du Monde, the original (well, reproduced in SL :P). Ive actually been to one of their stores (not in New Orleans). They serve these really cool fried dough thingies with powdered sugar, and really good coffee. Anyone know if its still there after the hurricane?
And of course, Bourbon Street. I have no idea why its so famous. But if Ive heard of it, its gotta be pretty popular.
The Big Easy sim is setup as a charity effort. There is a Hurricane Memorial Wall for the devastation and heroic efforts during the disaster. Take a moment to remember. And if you can spare a few $L, think about donating to the worthy cause. Hey, its only a couple hours of camping! :)
And...ooohhh...the spoooky St. Louis Cemetary. You gotta Force Sun to Midnight for this one :)
There were so many things to check out that I took nearly 100 pix for this entry alone! BTW, the secret to great SL photos is to take lots of them :) Try every pose, angle, and Force Sun setting!
There are also events and parties hosted here, along with a sand castle competition, party boat, jazz club, and bicycle shop (and I saw some people riding bicycles through town!) Theres even a grand piano on the party boat for Caterin to play! :)
If you havent been to New Orleans in the Big Easy sim, you dont want to miss this. Click on the Search button on the bottom of your screen, select the Places tab, and enter "orleans" as the keyword (this didnt work though when I wrote this). Here is the SLURL: Big Easy (125,199,25).
Today's gown is based on a series of beautiful drawings I came across while surfing Deviantart.com.
The Seven Deadly Sins: VANITY by `blackeri on deviantART
The series is called the Seven Deadly Sins. There is one drawing for each of the deadly sins (Vanity, Envy, Lust, Avarice, Sloth, Gluttony, and Wrath). OK, Vanity should be Pride, but its a woman :) To see the whole series, click on "blackeri" above for the artist's portfolio.
When I saw this, I knew I was going down for Vanity! Um...count the number of pictures in this blog without some part of me in it :) Actually, Wrath has the coolest dress, but I dont usually carry a whip. Plus I definitely have a couple mirrors in my purse :P
Most of the contestants in the Miss Second Life Formal Wear round wore this style of gown. The skirts used heavy shading to simulate folds.
To make a satin/silk wrinkle texture, create a new square document (512x512 pixels is best for SL). Select the Gradient Tool, and set the Mode to Difference. Choose White as foreground, and Black as background. Now, draw overlapping strokes back and forth over the canvas.
Here is a great Satin/Silk Texture Tutorial that explains this technique in detail.
Once I have a black and white texture that I like, I set the Layer Mode of the black and white texture to Multiply. Then I put a new layer with the color I want above the black and white texture (in this case, that luscious grape color :) ).
This gown uses a double skirt based on the Small Town Girl skirt. The bottom part uses scaled up version of the skirt pleats. Also, I increased the Flexible Path Tension setting to 8 to 10 (higher tension in the back). This makes the bottom part poof outward.
Hold my hands, my beloved blue poseball. Do you think we will be married in this cathedral one day?
Um...blue poseball, why are you running out? :P

We should be recognized that you control the prims very well as
well as the creation of clothing! Very great beautiful work !
mmmm, that's one lovely gown you've got on there! I'll chug along tonight to check out the piano. C.
Hi Natalia,
are you selling your creation? I would love that lovely formal gown, not that I am lokoking for partnership though. Keep on writing and discovering places for us.
Melissa (Melissavp Islander)
Oh natalia! Thank you for bringing this to our attention! I love New Orleans! I can't wait to go there!
Wow, just wow. I've just started working with flexi prims, and I have to say, you make it look easy.
Must try to figure out how to do that fold thing in PSP. You know, I spent yesterday at an art museum. Beautiflu works of the old masters, complex themes of birth/life/spirituality, yatatatat. Me, I could only see the garments. I think I spent 20 minutes or so just staring at the fabric folds on a 17th century dutch painting....
This is what I've come to XP
Adore your blog, admire your imagination and talent.
Altho you've mentioned the problems encountered in designing clothes (digression: note the "e"..I wish you'd add the "e". The word "cloths" has a different meaning.)
Back to design problem: the boobies.
When you take photos, the breasts appear to begin to swell at the Neckline!!
Darn unattractive--spoiling the gorgeous effect of your creations.
Is this permanent and forever. Could you reduce them slightly? Would different skins help? I see this effect on lots of ladies.
Would you consider making adjustments to fix this, so that your garments could be shown to their very best advantage?
Gosh, what a beautiful dress! Thanks for the advice on gradients.
it's _your_ Second Life, and i hope you continue to present yourself in it however you wish.
Kefrens, thanks for the compliment! As I learn more about prims, I am finding out all these new and creative things that can be done!
Caterin, have fun in New Orleans at the Party Boat! :)
Melissa, I apologize for being REALLY behind in putting stuff in the store! Yikes I have almost 10 things that needs to be packaged! Ill get moving on them... :)
Sorcha, I think you and K would have a great time in New Orleans. And take him to the Cathedral :)
Virrginia, you are so right about fabric folds: I do the same thing now when I see pictures and paintings! Its hard not to notice how realistic these masters have managed to paint their artwork (and all I can do is Photoshop tricks :P)
Dear Anonymous, heehee sorry about the "e" in clothes :) Ill get that in there :P
And I know what you mean about the...um...chest area problem. The whole chest area isnt realistic (clothing looks painted on). Im sure a bunch of guys designed the female AV's :P
In the existing SL, the only way to reduce the neckline appearance is to decrease the cleavage setting. This looks even more abnormal, because...well...things would go to the side. I tried to set cleavage to appear as if you were wearing a bra or some form of support (not a push-up, just a normal one). I know this must be annoying to look at...but I dont know how to fix it...
Lauralee, thanks! And arent gradients a wonderful tool?
Ged, thanks for the support! I had to pick 1 of the 7...Vanity is better than Wrath, isnt it? :P
Dear Anonymous:
I think "altho" may very well have a different meaning than the word "although." That is, of course, assuming that the word "altho" even exists? ;)
P.S. Sorry for comment on older post!
Cafe du Monde is the place with the great coffee and powdery beignets. And yes, as far as I know it's still there! The old French Quarter of the city was built on the high ground (very smart) and survived nicely! A friend of mine was living there at the time. ;]
Dear Anonymous, Im so glad that part of New Orleans is still there. The damaged looked terrible - looked like the whole city was in ruins. It's nice to see it being rebuilt once again (I even saw the French Quarters in a movie recently :D)
I know this is old and I really hope you see it! Or else I might have to post Off Topic in something newer :P
First I want to say that you have been an invaluable resource and I thank you so much, whenever people ask me how to do something I send them to your blog cause I know they will find it! That having been said...
I love your information on how to create gradients, and was so in love with this gown that I hurried over to deviantart to see the rest of the series. And Wrath! omg
So of course I started working on my own rendition of Wrath, it is nearly done and I would like to attempt the whole series. But I want to make sure I'm not stepping on your toes! Did you do any others from this series? and if so, do you mind terribly if I go ahead and do my own interpretations? Obviously I would not be copying your work but doing my own...but I have so much respect for all you have done here, if you tell me you would rather I didn't, then I most certainly wont :)
Ralektra, actually, feel free to make Vanity or Wrath if you like :) It wasnt my idea to begin with. I didnt do the whole series because I thought that might be too much :P
But you might want to contact the artist (she used to have a page where people could tell her about things inspired by her paintings) Good luck with your project :)
