Day 68: Formal Gown in Haunted Town
I have a favor to ask you: Today, I am wearing the dress for the Miss Second Life Formal Wear competition this Wednesday (Dec 6, 20006). Could you please tell me what you think? Via comments (anonymous is OK!) or SL inworld IM (Natalia Zelmanov). This is a formal wear competition, so everyone will be in beautiful gowns! Should I add something? It looks kinda plain, but I cant think of what to do without spoiling the lines of the dress! Im so nervous about this dumb thing!!! :P Thanks!
Today, the Search/Places function in Second Life didnt working. So basically, you cant go anywhere unless you either know the sim name or have a landmark. Unfortunately, I didnt have either for the places I planned to visit today! Thankfully, my friend Sorcha told me about this quiet little town and even gave me a landmark. Thank you so much, Sorcha!
So here I am, in this quaint little town called Little Silent Hill. Hmmm...what a coincidence. Wasnt there just a scary movie out called Silent Hill?
Anyway, I got here at night, and the town is covered in fog! And theres not a soul in sight! I wonder where everyone is tonight?
Whats this? Replicated in Second Life? Whatever do they mean?
Oh good, let me stay in the church for a little bit. Must be safe in here, right? Um...wheres that woman's voice coming from? Whats that noise?
Dead End? Oh...I dont like the sound of this at all! Where shall I go? What shall I do?
And how did I end up in this creepy forest! Oh...whats that sound? Whos there? Hello?
The town is still growing, with just the church, motel, restaurant, and the forest for now. But the detail and atmosphere is super creepy and memorable! Especially if you Forced Sun to Midnight (I almost fell out of my chair at some of the sound effects!)
Um...if you still want to come to Little Silent Hill, click on the Search button at the bottom of your screen, select the Places tab, and use "silent hill" as the keyword. The SLURL is Braunworth (42,119,179).
Say, isnt this how those scary movies go? A friend sends you to a remote little town somewhere. And then creepy things start happening... And then...
Ooh...maybe I can find someone to help me in the motel...
I spent all day today working on a formal gown for the Miss Second Life Pageant formal wear competition. This is 1 of 3 first round events (formal wear, casual, and swimwear). Since there are 65 contestants, we are broken up into 8 groups of 7-9 contestants each. I am in Group 5, which is scheduled for this coming Wednesday (Dec 6, 2006).
The scoring is based on a combination of judges, on-site audience (who click on a voting board), and off-site audience (who vote via the MissSL.com website). The weight is 50% judges, 25% on-site audience, and 25% off-site audience. We earn points for each round of events, and the girls with the highest scores will make it to the final round.
Its a bit of a popularity contest...thats why I dont think Ill win (I dont know a lot of people inworld). But I just want to make it to the final round!!!
My Miss SL Formal gown is a combination of all the things I learned to date. It is based on the Triangular Blue Dress, with a lot of modifications. I decreased the size and doubled the number of skirt panels in front to make the triangular opening look smoother.
The dress is built using the same technique as the Little Black Dress to create a single smooth seamless dress from top to bottom. I also switched to a black fabric that simulates brocade or velvet, based on the texture of the Black Gown I wore previously. The black texture makes it more difficult to notice the seam where the shirt meets the pants.
The gown also has a higher Gravity setting under Flexible Paths (flexi prims) so it will retain its shape better while walking and posing. The dress "moves" beautifully, and keeps its shape very well indeed.
Since you can see thru the front of the skirt, I added a red "lining" to the inside of the skirt to make it more visually appealing (instead of just being black on the inside as well). I tried making a double-skirt, with the petticoat being red. But the red kept coming through the black at the slightest movement. So I abandoned the double-skirt and just made one side of the skirt panels red.
I tried adding a belt, bows, and ribbons. But whatever I tried seems to break the lines of the dress. I gave up and left the dress alone.
So do you think the dress looks plain like that? I cant actually say anything during the competition, so it has to go by appearances only. Theres no way to tell anyone about all these wonderful things about the dress. They would either like it or not.
If you can think of anything, please let me know! I really appreciate any suggestions! :)
Oh, I knew it! The blonde always gets it in the scary movies. I knew I shouldnt have worn that blonde hair today!
(And Im going to take a shower now...I touched those sheets...eeewwww!)

Natalia, I really love your blog, it's sassy, intelligent there is a sparkle of enthusiasm that glitters through your work, either be it on paper from you blog or through the other mediums within SL that you choose, your creations are superb. That dress is truly breathtaking, I think however I might have gone with a darker red myself, but what do I know!
Taimi
Lovely Natalia! The dress is superb and you look so elegant. You should go with a very dramatic hairstyle! I'm glad you liked Silent Hill! I was scared too though! hehehe
the dress is divine! Good luck.
Nat, I think your dress is elegant. There is nothing derogatory in fashion design when one uses the term "basic". Your dress has cleanlines, a lovely shape, and the red lining on the inside provides a nice "pop" of color. I wouldn't change a thing.
If you are desperately unsatisfied though, the only suggestion I could offer is maybe a brooch or pin at the apex of your neckline (with or without bling!).
I know some people are pretty bored with bling, and others do want to contribute AT ALL to lag, but there ya go.
Love your blog!
Taimi, you are absolutely right: The red lining is a bit bright! I will tone it down a bit to make it more "realistic" :)
Sorcha, you are so right that hair really makes all the diff! Im going off the Gurl6 tonight for hair shopping! There goes my allowance :(
Pyxel, thanks for a great idea! I think I will get a a hairstyle that goes up so I can wear a brooch :) Im staying away from bling though like you said! :)
Thank you for all your advice! It makes me feel better about the dress! I still have one little surprise left I think...Im working on that today :)
I think pixel is right - there's nothing wrong with the basic approach - the dress looks lovely (the red lining is the kicker).
I would cut back on jewellery and wear a simple necklace or - as suggested - a brooch. No bling, though. Take good care of your shoes, the will be very visible I guess.
I hope to make it tomorrow to vote for you!
Thanks Laurelee for your advice! I have definitely fixed up the shoes based on what you suggested. I also swapped my flower chocker for a diamond necklace. Not exactly simple...but Im with you: NO BLING! :)
How did you get in? I can't seem to get in the little silent hill percel.
Geist, try it again...it may just be lag. I am there right now :)
There are 2 Silent Hills now: "Little Silent Hill" and "Silent Hill". This post is about "Little Silent Hill".
