Things I Like to Do in Second Life

So what do I actually do in SL?

1. Shopping
One of my current goals is to build a diff outfit everyday. It helps me understand how to use items within SL and how diff fabric effect work together. Heres just the partial list of outfits I have (Wow, I already have 6,818 items in inventory after 1 month :/)

To do that, I have a program:

Get every freebie and $1L box in sight. I can recognize every piece of freebie clothing within 100M. I dont think there are any significant caches of freebie/$1L items I have not raided.

Periodic scans of the Search menu to find shops with specific items, from hair to boots to sweater to formal to bikini. TP to stores. Find a few I like. Repeat the whole process.

Check out a few yard sales, etc. But I dont tend to hit big there.

2. Hanging Out
You gotta have places to go when things are slow. At 3AM Linden Time, your too tired and everyone else have gone home. So what are the good hangouts at anytime? Newbie places. The constant inflow of newbies keep things happening. Newbies like to talk. The want to explore. They are alive and full of energy. Older Residents are jaded. They have seen it all and tried everything at least once. So for hangouts, avoid the people with the cool prim hairs.

My fav hangouts are the Ahern Welcome Area and New Citizens Plaza. If youve been in SL, youve probably been to these 2 places already.

This is Ahern at 3AM in the morning. And its a relatively slow night. Ahern is where most avatars end up after Orientation Island. Ahern is always alive, with a mix of newbies and oldies, along with people trying to help out (Im in this latter group). The oldies (prim hair people) are mostly there to watch the newbies and to show off their outfits or avatars or gadgets. I try to do some good here by pointing people to places to get started. If you have a few space mins and just want to hang out, why not pop into Ahern and lend a hand?

New Citizens Plaza is also a newbie hangout, after most people get over the initial shock of the mainland (basically after leaving Ahern). They have a limited supply of freebies, along with nice tools for taking Profil pix, info to get started, and classes. Theres also a sandbox where newbies and oldies try out their toys. Theres a regular group that hangs out here. The staff is very friendly. Drop and and make some friends! BTW Im there every Thu afternoon for the Newbie Q&A Salsa (Im not the host, I just like to go). So come dance with me :)

Here a pix from a party we had at New Citizens. We built our own disco in the sandbox and kept adding stuff as we went. Im the blue butterfly :)

3. Playing
OK, this is too much to get into here. But I joined up in a role-playing game sim recently. If you like RP, you have to try it in SL. Its an amazing experience, because there is a real soul behind every one of those avatars. Its not a computer shooter game. Its not just chat. Its real time and you can come dressed to the hilt (in fact, its required in some sims). Will get into this more in a later post.

4. Partying
Dance the day/night away. Theres always a club open somewhere with dance machine, pose balls, money balls, particle effects, and enough bling to crash a super computer. Just pull open Search/Events and start club hopping. Something ought to catch your eye.

5. Classes
Theres nothing cooler about SL than learning about SL in SL. Seriously, free classes all day long, from basic object creation to making your own suit of armor. Theres even classes on modeling (yes, I went to a few), starting a biz, making $L, etc. Sometimes when I need a break, I pop into a class just to get my mind off.

6. Events
Theres always special events going on in SL. Art galleries, philosophy discussions, and fashion shows.

I even signed up for the Annual Miss Second Life competition. This should be interesting...

7. Camping
No, I dont mean your tent and sleeping bags. I mean planting you butt somewhere for hours on end to earn a few pennies. Yes its silly, but so is buying digital hair. And I need the one to pay for the other. Does 2 silliness make a genius?

Greetings! Interesting at you blog)
what should be internet connection for comfortable game in SL? I only recently was registered, and my dial-up connection does not allow to play normally.. how many kbps per second?

I just started camping... I'm not sure about staying on, though I'm feeling sadly addicted already, but until I know I swore not to pay a cent for this - and with a free account one is sadly strapped for cash. ;)

Fortunately it was pretty easy to install AutoHotkey and write a tiny little script to activate the SL window every 20 minutes to remain logged in... gonna camp all night, literally. :P

Anyway, great job on the blog, has been immensely helpful and enjoyable. Even if you do mostly have girl hair only for guys in your store. :-D

Oh, and Anonymous, re connection speed... you need broadband of some kind to get a decent experience. I turned on maximum speed in the client, and that is 1500kbps (kilobits, so very roughly 150 kilobytes/second.) Dialup in 56kbits. The minimum in the SL client seems to be 50kbps, but I can't imagine that would be survivable. You also realistically need a decent 3D graphics card from Nvidia or ATI, I'd say.

PS. The WindLight client is incredible.

Croft, lol I just realized I havent done any of the things I said here for at least 6 months ;P (well, I did go to 2 events, I guess :P)

I *think* theres a way to turn off the AFK thing in the SL program itself. Turn on the Debug menu (Ctrl-Alt-D). Go to Client/Character/Character Tests and turn off "Go Away/AFK When Idle". Im not sure how well this works, but it seems OK for a few hours...

And yes, Windlight is amazing! :)

Natalia, sometimes I do go to New Citizens Plaza or Ahern but I cant stop myself from laughing at the clothes or attachments they wear. Honestly, I try to avoid newbies for their own sake or I end up saying something really nasty and hurting their feelings.

And yes I must remember that I was once a newbie myself and the people that helped me were infact newbies too and I owe friendship and help to them.

Dear Anonymous, SL is not easy to use. I try to keep this in mind whenever I am helping someone. I can still remember figuring out how to move at Orientation Island, so I can appreciate how hard it is to figure out the whole Inventory thing. So please be patient :) The newbie you help could one day be Miss SL ;P
