Day 61: Autumn Casual and Big Brother

Ever get the feeling you are being watched? Well, you are, in the Second Life sim called Suffugium. (Anyone know what that inscription means?)

Suffugium is a themed commercial/residential sim modeled on a futuristic totalitarian city. Sort of cyberpunk in 1984 (the book). It is the work of a few private individuals, but one that is fun to explore, just because it is so different than the rest of SL.

As a new sub-citizen entering the city, you must scan your palm. OK, you dont have to, but this gives you the sim rules. Basically, be nice, dont fly around too much, dont shoot noisy weapons, and dont bother people.

Drones and police cars patrol the streets here. Most of the shops here also follow the dark theme of this city. Many have unique items, or an interesting way of presenting the merchandise. Check out the AO shop (the behavioral modifier :P).

You really have to admire their sense of humor though. I havent figured out what Obey cola does (I tried the citrus flavored one). I was worried I might get married or something. ;P

Me officer? I wasnt dumpster diving...honest. Would I do that in this dress? Where did I get this T-shirt from, you ask? Um... Um...

I barely touched that manhole cover and fell into the sewers. OMG...Im too pretty to be eaten by rats today! :P

And how about a game of Holoball? The official description is that it is a cross between raquetball and Tron. I did not catch anyone playing while I was there. But the court looked interesting. Unfortunately, the rackets are $200L, so I wanted to see it first...

Its lots of interesting little details that makes Suffugium such an interesting place. But do NOT bring your date there...this isnt New Paris ;P To come to Suffugium, Search under Places for "suffugium". The SLURL is Suffugium (102,116,34).

With Thanksgiving behind us, it is time to acknowledge that summer is finally over. Its time to bring out the autumn colors! (I cant promise that I wont make a sundress occasionally though... :P) The idea for today's dress came out of a magazine. Im too embarrassed to name the magazine...and yes, Im still reading it!

Unlike the Pilgrim Outfit yesterday, this outfit is texture heavy. It took 5 separate texture files to build the outfit (at $10L per upload, thats a whole afternoon camping! :O). But it was well worth it and came out beautifully.

The grey dress is the Salsa Dress design with a turtle neck collar, cuffs, and straight skirt pleats.

The socks are textured in a cross-hatch pattern. And the belt-scarf is built using a sweater knit pattern. BTW the belt-scarf is there to hide the texture mismatch between the shirt and pants/shorts. It also adds a much-needed accent to the outfit.

Oh finally! Im so glad to find a girl's refuge in this dreadful place! Let me go inside and hide from these seedy characters...

"Legum servi sumus ut liberi esse possimus"

I had to look it up, because I don't know my declensions and prepositions. "We are servants of the law, so that we may be free."

Sorcha, isnt Silent Hill a scary movie? Did they make a sim out of it? Thats amazing. We have to go check it out some time! :)

OMG Melissa, you speak (latin?) Wow, thats impressive! I was just kidding about the inscription, and didnt expect anyone to translate it. That was really amazing! :)

But it makes a lot of sense. The inscription is on a chained-up statue. Thanks for the translation!

Actually, I've seen "We are slaves of the law..." Also, it turns out that it's a quote of Cicero.

Melissa,

This is so interesting, because the statue at Suffugium appears to be taking the quote out of context!

I found this at http://www.chroniclesmagazine.org/cgi-bin/booklog.cgi/Thomas_Fleming.Cicero_3,_De_Offici.printer : "In the conclusion, Cicero says: A commonwealth without law is like a body without a mind. The magistrates are servants of the law, judges interpreters of the law, and we are all, in the end, slaves of the law that we might be free."

I dont think Cicero meant to view law as being oppressive. Its a cool quote nevertheless! :)

Thanks for finding out about all these cool facts, Melissa!
